Ford Capless Fuel Filler

Refueling made simple, clean and painless

Concerns about fuel theft and spillage have made the gas cap a standard feature. Ford replaces it with a spring-loaded interior lid that closes off if anyone tries to put a nonstandard fuel-pump nozzle in the hole. The system, which rolled out this year, seals tighter than a typical fuel cap, too, reducing evaporative emissions. ford.com

A check valve? Nobody thought of that before? Or could they just not figure out how to make a staple of hydraulic and pneumatic systems work? Also, what happens if i try to put in gas from my gas can? Am I frozen out? If so, it's the type of stupid "feature" that could encourage many people to buy something else.

Concerns have been raised over the safety, security and environmental impact of this device. According to Ford's own technical service bulletins there are a number of problems with the capless filling system. Car filler caps freezing, fuel dishcharged to the ground when refulling, premature fuel delivery pump shut off's and risk of fuel blowback on to customer are all faults blamed on the owner's incorrect use and positioning of refuling nozzel or the fact that they have to leave it in the filling hole for at least 10 secs before pulling it back out. The above question asked how do I fill from a jerry can? Well you need a special tube that is part funnel and part nozzle tube to bypass the two unit flaps and allow fuel to pour into tank. However this is a heaven sent gift to any wouldbe fuel russlers. Jimmy open the car flap, insert the plastic tube bypass and push the syphon tube into tank and suck away. Greatest shame is that the incorrect refuling techniques said to be used on 70% of refills may cause greater environmental pollution via the spills than the claims for fume recycling proclaim. Over all, some suggest its another potentally costly clanger for Ford and those who follow this design.

so what happens if the door is ajar or off and water from rain snow or somewhere else gets introduced into the fuel sysstem?Ford just tries again and again to build the better mousetrap
