German Texters Get Street Signals In The Sidewalk

In the name of safety, the first city has given in to the cultural shift to walking with your head buried in your smartphone.

New embedded lights mean texting pedestrians in Augsburg, Germany don’t have to look up to know when they shouldn’t cross a street anymore. Officials in the German city were forced to install the lights after, for what may be the first time in history, German pedestrians were becoming less rigid in obeying the traffic signals.

This is the first time a city has installed lights to help pedestrians be aware of their surroundings without having to look up, but it’s not the first time a city has designed sidewalks around the increasingly unaware smartphone user.
