I still can't decide if this is genius or stupid, but creativity points are definitely due: Samsung's high-end LED 9000 TV will come with a touchscreen remote that enables you to watch TV on the remote while playing a Blu-ray disc on the screen.
The remote interfaces with the TV with both traditional infrared signals and Wi-Fi. It can also connect to your home network and summon videos from your Windows PC to the TV or the remote's own screen.
As you can see, the thing is a fingerprint magnet. And personally, I've never understood the advantages of a touchscreen remote--once physical buttons are out of the picture, it's tough to operate the remote by feel without looking like we're all used to doing. But with this, switching your gaze from the big screen to the remote is kind of the point.
Five amazing, clean technologies that will set us free, in this month's energy-focused issue. Also: how to build a better bomb detector, the robotic toys that are raising your children, a human catapult, the world's smallest arcade, and much more.

Neat.
Bad idea.
1. Durability. I want a remote that can be thrown around a room and dropped thousands of times without damage.
2. Battery life. A device with a screen will take more energy than one without.
3. I want physical buttons so that you don't have to look at the remote every time that you change channels.
4. Fingerprints
Just something about the buttons: If you notice, the main buttons for controlling the TV are embossed metal, not touch screen.
That beep with every touch would REALLY get annoying after a while. Hope that can be turned off separate from the mobile tv volume.
dumb.
I also love that fact that you would have to plug it in to watch tv, that makes it real handy. Jess at least make the remote wireless so you can move and watch tv on it.
Azorus
I think the cord is just for charging and uploading programs/settings into it.
Like the Logitech remotes, I'm betting these can be customized through software loaded on a PC/Mac. It can be utilized to control different hardware other than the TV, such as your Blu-ray player, etc.
Sometimes, physical keys are useless when you have an older piece of hardware or a very unique one that doesn't use the "traditional" buttons found on most TVs, stereos, etc.
Having a touch screen makes it easier to bring up an actual button for a missing function, because we all know that on universal remotes with physical buttons, not all the buttons are utilized because they don't allow mapping them.
Also, just by looking at the cord, I can tell that it's removal from the remote. Why else would they put the red triangle to tell you which side of the cord to keep up when inserting into the slot?
Well after owning an iPhone for the past few years I have noticed that I am able to text without hardly having to look at the screen at all. So being able to use the remote without having to look at should prove to be very easy to do. You just have to know where the buttons are just like anything else.
good points. Why do you have a tv, if you are gonna watch the remote? seems like a pointless invention.
This does seem pointless and I'd worry about durability and battery life.
I want a remote that can survive being lost in the couch, stepped on or being used as a hammer by my 3 year old niece.
If I wish to watch two things at once I already have the PIP function and this multi channel preview that shows six channels.
As for the touch screen I wonder if all this touch screen technology is a conspiracy to sell more moist towelettes?
