The notion of multiple universes is one that cosmologists like to theorize about but generally don’t relish proving, mainly because doing so would be very difficult. But a team of researchers that showed a few years ago how matter might travel between our universe and others now think they ought to be able to observe this phenomenon in action using existing technology, lending credence to the multiverse theory. All they need is a neutron bottle, some neutrons, and a year.

The experiments would require bottling neutrons in an ultracold state, a process that physicists have been performing for years to measure how quickly neutrons decay. These bottles--made of ordinary matter imbued with magnetic fields--are able to trap these super-cooled neutrons and keep them moving slowly enough that they can be observed. Physicists can measure the rate at which these trapped neutrons strike the walls of the bottle and how quickly this rate declines as the neutrons decay.

In a perfect experiment, the neutrons would always decay precisely at a rate equal to the beta decay rate, but this is never the case because neutron bottles aren’t perfect--the rate of decay is always a bit faster, presumably because some of the neutrons escape by means other than decay.

Or maybe they don’t. Michael Sarrazin at the University of Namur in Belgium and a few colleagues have postulated that maybe these neutrons simply depart for another universe. They have already shown how, theoretically, large enough magnetic potentials could provide the basis for inter-universe matter swapping. Now, in a paper available at arXiv, they’ve used decay rate data to place an upper limit on how often this might be able to happen. They found that it’s probably quite rare if it happens at all--according to their figures, the probability of a neutron making the leap to another universe is smaller than one in a million.

But that doesn’t rule it out completely, especially considering how many neutrons there are out there. Moreover, Sarrazin thinks he has a way to observe this experimentally. A change in the gravitational potential should also affect the rate of matter swapping, and the gravitational potential her on Earth changes as the planet moves around the Sun. Run a neutron trapping experiment for a full year, and you could see if there is a modulation in the rate of neutron decay based on some kind of annual cycle. If so, that means the neutrons probably aren’t just decaying, but swapping universes as well.

Except in the other universe they run the same experiment at the same time and the neutrons from that universe go into our bottle experiment and messes up the results.

Well, not much to say, except that we can look forward to the results. The only phenomena related to this I can think of, is the apparent annual cycle of radiation rates; which seem to vary (slightly but detectibly) with our distance from the sun. Either coincidence, or is there some relation between decay and inter-universe transfer.

For those interested in this sort of thing, I suggest the book "The Gods Themselves", which is written by Asimov and is based on this sort of thing. Just don't let your imagination create expectations reality can't fulfil.

Well, this is certainly interesting, but how does this correlate to "zero point energy"? Not the whackjob free energy deal, but the proof for the UNcertainty Principle? I.e since vacuum is empty, its energy state should be zero, but it can't be due to the uncertainty principle. So they theorized that matter must spontaneously pop into existence and then blink out, and proved it in a lab. Some people working with cosmology theorized that this may be the missing mass we need to explain our current observations, but the general idea is that it is not enough mass. Just wondered if anyone had any info as to whether this is an extension of, or somehow related to this effect.

Multiple Universes are beleived to be real. This is dealing with a type of model of the universe called "Membrane Theory". It's not a joke. Since you think it a story then let me tell it as a story. Now get your marshomellows and cocoa and gather round the campfire chillens:

Once upon a time, there were brilliant scientists. The scientists set out to find out what the universe was made of. They thought that there must be more to it than the simple 3 dimnensions we live in. They began looking and more scientists started joinging the search. They broke up into teams. Each team was idenitified by a set of math that represented a view of the universe that those scientist believed was real. One by one they revealed their research. Each math model started to explain more and soon they had a picture of the universe with 11 dimensions. Of course everyone thought that 11 was just too many. Soon a bitter rivalry broke out between the 10th and 11th demension scientists. After a long battle, and what seemed like ages, the two teams, (10 & 11), realized that they were looking at the same model from a slightly different view. The 11th dimension had proved the 10th dimensional theory. Since these two models represented the same dimension, the final answer was that there are 10 dimensions in the universe. It didnt stop there though.

Suddenly this brought forth all types of efforts to understand how this could be. A new theory was that these Dimenesions would have had to have been created during the big-bang was formed. However, some didnt beleive in the big-bang. In fact, the very stretching of the universe (now thought to be dark energy) was beleived to be happening due to the universe dissipating energy from possibly another universe slamming into ours. Of course mainstream science laughed at this proposition. There were calls from everywhere :"This is too complex!" "Propostorous!". "There are only 3 dimensions youve gone mad!". However, there it sat, the data. The reserch and data suggested that we live in more then 3 dimensions. In fact the universe and its forces, especially the apparent weakness of gravity, were explained by it.

They now thought knew two new important facts about our universe. 1) We live in more than 3 dimensions and 2) its most basic element was a tiny vibrating string. The string was finite size and was very small. They called this small increment the "plank length." or 10 to the 35th power "small". These tiny strings vibrated and they came in two flavors: "closed loop" and "open". They were so small that they made up the nucleaus of atoms and even more. A closed loop permiated every type of matter and gravity was considered a closed loop. An open loop was normal types of energy and matter and other things. Due to the vibrations of these strings, the vibration itself was thought to interact with an invisible field that created mass. They called this field "the Higgs Field". This field interacted with the strings and gave everything mass.

Before long scientists broke up into two distinct belief systems. 1) Those whoe beleived in the big-bang as a sigularity (something so small its smaller than plank) and 2) those who belived in multiple universes. "Membrane Theory" was now born.

This Membrane theory was magnificent in its approach to explain everything and the beginnings of our universe. After all if our universe was hit by another one, then what does that say about our understanding that the universe is infinite? Like we were taught it was in school. This new theory suggested that our universe was in fact finite and floated in an extra-dimensional space with other universes. Each universe has its own physics that are guided by its own "vibrations" or, its strings. One day, one of these unviverses or "membranes" hit ours and caused what we understand as the "big bang".

Since this universe hit us, our universe has been trying to dissipate this energy outward and go back to a "zero state" of calm. Like ripples in a pond continue to ripple until the water becomes still again. Once there are no more vibrations, it is possibly thought that strings will not vibrate anymore and that energy and matter will cease to exist. Everything fades to black.

I can tell that the science is real. This Membrane theory of multople universes has many unanswered mysteries about it that still keep it alive. Certain quantum principals are starting to bring to light the fact that there may indeed be dimensions we cant see and wuite possibly there may be other universes. What is a little weird is that they dont define "universe" in this article. In many science articles about this subject you find that instead of universe the author meant to say "dimension". In any case, it does sound very crazy but it is real math and real science.

This is why its so important to understand gravity at the plank length, to determine if it is spread out over many dimensions or just 3. This is why its so important to understand if "dark matter/energy" are real. Why is the universe is expanding. Will we have a universe forever?

Well "the story" was for those who deny the existance of Multiple Universes. They derive from a "theory of everything". My simple story. How do you talk about Multiple Universes without explaining how they could exist and what science deals with it? How do you talk about them without talking about string or membrane theory?

I admit it was a little long but the comments looked like people were doubting the existence of Multiple Universes. On a second read I did come off a little condescending and patronizing, as well as perhaps too much information. I do apologize and I will shut up... "for now".

Yes, most of the theory that you allude to does exist (although it's both simplified and exaggerated at the same time in your account).

String theory and M-theory are real theories. Do not confuse them with reality (not yet, anyway). Neither theory, at this time, has any testable predictions it can make -- which is precisely why they remain fringe research within Physics (though growing fields -- pun intended).

Don't get me wrong, I find both fascinating, and Michio Kaku -- a String theorist -- is one of my favourite Physics authors of all time. But there is no evidence, no hard *proof* that they're true.

This is why other researchers -- like Stephen Hawking -- dismiss string theory. Because of the sheer lack of evidence. The numbers match up extraordinarily nicely, but that's it. And Hawking is a bloody mathematician -- if anyone should appreciate the value of numbers in Physics, it's him.

Again, I love the idea of string theory and all that, but don't go off on a campfire sermon suggesting the whole of the scientific community is on board with it or that there's an unshakeable foundation of evidence for it.
