Diginfo brings us news of this Hitachi Kokusai system that can monitor video feeds from around the world in real time, scanning for a particular face. When it finds what it's looking for, it closes in to provide footage of what the person has been doing previously and what he or she is doing next.
As long as you're facing the camera, give or take 30 degrees left or right, if someone's looking for you, they'll find you. The system will be on the market next year.
holy sh##! minority report here we come, cheers
no where to hide == less crime ??
Are you sure less crime. Imagine the data base photo computer is hacked they make your picture criminal number one. Now the whole world is looking for you! Seems crime is up and more innocent people are made to suffer.
What is no hacking is involved at all, but evil bad leaders and they identify you as criminal number one agains the state! Where will you hide?
Science sees no further than what it can sense, i.e. facts.
Religion sees beyond the senses, i.e. faith.
I think they mean from PUBLIC network cameras.
That could mean a criminal withdrawing money from a bank won't send an alert if they are not watching his card number since the bank's surveillance cameras are private/closed.

I suspect they have been using stuff like this in Vegas for some time now.
That's a lot of faces...if you think about it's like sorting through every person in the state of California in a sec.
I can think of numerous ways that this could be misused. But, the tech is there, and there's no way to really stop it.
I do wish that popsci and most other sources would quit acting as if these systems were bulletproof. It would be tremendously useful to see reports on the percentage of misidentifications ( false positives) and nonidentifications (false negatives). Especially if they threw in factors such as lighting, camera angle physical type, etc.
I like to read a website called www.cnet.com the security section. Long ago, I remember reading about an article they posted of how the FBI, CIA, POLICE and other government originations have the technical ability to turn on your cell phone and listen to all the conversations. Yes, these originations have to get a court order prior to doing such an act. Also the cell phone would be turn on and the authorities would listen the conversations, but by all appearances the cell could look powered off and show no lights.
Well time has pass and we technology has grown with the cell phone being smart and we all have cameras in these phones. You can even add you home computer camera as well to what I am about to suggest. Just because you power off you cell and it appears to be off, does not mean it is off. Just because you computer camera is showing no light indication of it being on, does not mean it is not on or the microphone attaché to it. And remember a great many of these smart phones have built in GPS, information the government authorities of your exact location!
Now incorporate the above technology from this article to what I just said and in fact no person is hidden from the government, not even in your own home!!!!
You cell phone is only off, if you remove the battery. You can only be sure you computer camera and microphone is off, if you unplug it. FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

from different perspectives too!
