Gallery: The Apple Patents at the Heart of Their Attack On Smartphones

Maybe I'll sue the world for my patent on using fingers to press down on a qwerty keyboard... Oh wait I have a patent on walking, two patents actually, one involves taking your first step with your right foot, the other is with you left.. What a joke! Suck it Steve Jobs... ya hypocrite... go Kodak and Nokia

PS. 1st!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bet this will back fire on Apple...

With comments like this you look like a PC fanboy (ie Apple hater)!

A few questions for you:
1. Do you oppose all patents or just those issued to Apple?
2. How many patents have Kodak, Nokia and Microsoft each filed?
3. Do you really want a Chinese type system where inventors rights have no value?

Considering the issue date of some of these patents, the application for the patent predates almost all the competition and in some cases, so do the issued patents themselves. There may be some question on the most recent ones, but when you consider that more than half of them were issued between 10-15 years ago, HTC doesn't have much of a leg to stand on.

"There may be some question on the most recent ones, but when you consider that more than half of them were issued between 10-15 years ago, HTC doesn't have much of a leg to stand on."

And doesn't that just annoy the heck of some people !

I think there are people who value having cheap electronics more than they value fairness.

Apple has patents that date back to the Newton, a groundbreaking product that set the stage for all PDA's.

Apple could have owned that market, but when Steve Jobs returned he cut any program that wasn't in the black.

He was right to do so; Apple made a profit of $13.7 billion dollars last year.

And they wouldn't be in that position if they hadn't re-organized and re-prioritized back then.

Now, they've returned to the portable electronics market, and made it their focus.

Mac sales were good; and the Mac segment is growing much faster than the industry average.

But the portable market is not only Apple's bread and butter, it's the steak, too.

And today, there are a lot of competitors that are copying Apple's technology without paying a dime.

That's not something any company can overlook.

Imagine if somebody reverse engineered Windows 7, made a few improvements and started selling it.

Do you think for a minute that Microsoft wouldn't sue?

Heh. Microsoft sues people who DON'T deserve it !

A interesting article, something quite revealing of the mentality of Apple's board of directors.

Regarding patent 7,657,849 "Unlocking a device by performing gestures on an unlock image" - Abusive IMHO as this was declared the 2 of February this year when we all know that this action has been implemented on all sorts of touch screen devices for years before. Apple should have patented this well before 2009.

Regarding patent 7,362,331 : Time-based, non-constant translation of user interface objects between states" -
Microsoft and Sun might have something to say about this as we've seen this sort of effect in Windows and Solaris back in the 90's. Apple should have patented this when the released their NEWTON. Not in 2009.

Regarding patent 7,479,949 : Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics - Palm Inc. Might have something to say as we've seen this type of action on palm pilots for years before. Apple should have patented this when the released their NEWTON. Not in 2009.

Regarding patent 7,469,381 :
List scrolling and document translation, scaling, and rotation on a touch-screen display - For me this concerns the passage of pages on something like a PDF document... Does Adobe have something to say about this patent declared in 2008 ?

Regarding patent 5,920,726 : System and method for managing power conditions within a digital camera device - I'm pretty sure canon and kyocera had this implemented well before apple declared this in 1999.

Regarding patent 7,383,453 : Conserving Power By Reducing Voltage Supplied To An Instruction-Processing Portion Of A Processor : What do Intel, AMD and Sun have to say about this patent declared in 2008 ?

Apple might have fair cause on a few of the patents cited in their lawsuit but they are abusive for some notably N° 7,657,849.. So much so I've decided to not buy another iphone or another apple device for at least a few years to come...

Most of the guys that are griping about the suits here get so worked up about this issue when you guys have not created anything of the sort. Can you imagine if you did, you'd be jumping on the suits just for looking at your gadget.
