USB is as close as we're probably going to get to a universal gadget-charger standard. But to charge something without occupying a precious free port on your computer, you need a power brick adapter. Not with these $10 wall sockets from True Power.
These will fit with the wiring already in your home, giving you two powered USB ports (or "holes" as Prickly Pete would say) for each wall socket. They're available next year.

I hope next year means January '10. These would be great for any outlets near your computer especially.
I will take 10.

It'd be cool if not only they powered the USB device, but could also connect said device to your home network through a central router or USB hub? That way, not only can you power your device, but you can centrally control the device from your home PC or whatever.
I know that some "modern" homes have RJ-45 jacks in rooms just like telephone jacks, and are connected to the central router of the home. It'd be great if they did the same with USB.
this will be tottally worth it to have these in my house.
(details classified)
lol thats so tottally funny awsome!!!!
Just one more da**ed thing for the kids to poke paper clips into.
I just thought of something...
Has anyone patented the not-really-very-child-proof covers for those things yet?
Yeah, I'd love to get these all over my house.
Rpenri, I might do that for my house (still in design stages) Question is how much it would cost. (to have them in a home network)

Those would make great stocking stuffers
Why would you want to run USB through your house? Wired connectivity is dead. A wirelessly routed house is cheaper and doesn't require new contruction or massive retofitting.
What this does is let you take your wireless devices and charge them. Hopefully, this will lead to a more universal powering system (rather than the drawer of chargers in every denomination).
Nice that with these, you only have to flip out an outlet (an easy process) and cheaply, since you only would need to change a few outlets baased upong your needs (I can't imagine even the most tech addicted houses needing more than two or three).
@ Oakspar
I think it is simular to what is already in europ. It uses exsisting wiring to transmit data to another usb port on the same curcit.

I like to think of unprotected outlets as a natural selection filter. Matter of fact make it big enough for whole fingers. More importantly regarding natural selection and this comment. They don't have enough output for serious damage. That is why a laptop can only power so many ports... say mine for instance wont run an external hard drive that doesn't have it's own power supply.
O and they need to crank up the power on those finger sized outlets too.
With 7 billion people the world around us will thank us. They should start installation in China and India first.
so when USB 3.0 comes out will these still charge the new devices?
I wonder why they didn't make it to output 2A like most of the newer USB Wall units instead of merely 600mA? I would like to use it to power some of my devices, but they require 5v at 1.5A, 600mA just won't cut it. Even the iPhone charger is 1A output.
That way, not only can you power your device, but you can centrally control the device from your home PC or whatever.
