Waterproof TV's?

Is there a big market for watching TV in the rain/underwater?

you have no idea.

especially in a house with little kids. you'd be surprised what can get spilled on the TV.

The military might buy a fare few.

yeah B.V. tends to be a little short sited when ever he posts. I could think of a lot of different businesses that wouldn't mind a water proof TV. I doubt it will be a HUGE market, but there is a niche out there for this.

what about outside. outside cafe or something. the possibilities are endless. plenty of places have a secure outside area that they may want to keep a TV for what ever reason.

I was thinking about outside areas... but nobody around here goes to uncovered patios at a cafe/bar when it's raining since most sane people don't like sitting in puddles of water. Seems to me that if you're outside and you are watching TV while it's raining, you're gonna be sitting under a roof (and presumably keeping your tv under the roof as well).

I guess if you DID wanna watch a waterproof TV in the rain you'd have to get waterproof extension cords, waterproof cable receiver/antenna, waterproof dvd/bluray/dvr player, waterproof speakers, and whatever else (which I am not aware of them making).

I guess for spills/etc. it would be good... or maybe in a steamy bathroom or next to a hot-tub or something?

Do you often sit in patio furniture in the rain? Probably not. But it does. So it needs to be waterproof. Same concept. The TV is outside all the time, whether its being watched or not. It needs to be waterproof so that when you DO go outside to watch it, it'll still work. :)

wow. B.V. how short sited can you be? no one ever said anything about watching TV in the rain. But most TVs are HARD MOUNTED to a wall or wall bracket. and guess what??? RAIN happens. maybe somebody doesn't want to take it off the wall every time it rains. you amaze me every time you post.
look at willycronka and Brin londo. They came to the same conclusion I did. common sense........

do I really need to give more examples. An aquarium. maybe they want displays outside but water splashes. same for a water park, or a water ride for an amusement park. Have you ever been to an amusement park. most of them have TVs while you wait in line, but some like splash mountinan have... WATER!!! so maybe they can put a TV scree with your picture on it when they take it on the ride, but there is chance it might get splashed. I am sure if I spent more than 30 seconds thinking about this I could come up with a dozen more examples of common sense uses.

Judging by the grammar and spelling inaka_rob's posts, I'd guess he's just starting to hit puberty and is feeling the anger associated with surges of testosterone in a developing body.

You make a good point about not wanting to bring in a TV after you are done watching it in good weather.

But the same thing has been solved with grills. I leave my grill outside all of the time when it's raining or snowing... I just put a grill cover over it.

I'd be willing to bet that buying a normal TV and a "TV cover" would be a lot cheaper than buying this water-proof TV.

Hell, even if I had a waterproof TV, I'd still get a cover for it since I wouldn't want birds "decorating" it with feces, or acorns/twigs smacking into the screen during windy days.

Most electronics are not designed to handle the ambient moisture of being outside covered in a tarp. I personally would not trust a "TV cover" to keep the electronics dry enough to keep it in good working order. A single drop of water on most unprotected circuit boards would mean the death of the device.

I know where this would be good. On a boat! Think of all the endless possibilities! If I had a nice boat, I would have it. You could put the sunrise on there, and watch it as the sun sets! :P

If a few of you spent the better part of your time commenting on the article/discussing it..instead of bashing on each other and making poor attempts to troll the site, you might just learn something new every once in a while...

A boat would be an ideal location for such a television. From what I've seen, heatpipes have been used for processor cooling for years now so I think it was just a matter of time really, and although tv cabinets don't really get THAT hot in your typical home, they definitely would out in the blowing sands of a desert, etc.

Also, if you have trouble finding any other uses for such a television, try clicking onto ciiltech's website.. They even have a short video that shows just what sort of things you could expect from one of their products. Note that the 42's specs look awesome for what it can withstand (built-in heater, operates -40°F to 140°F etc.) and it also weighs a hefty 92lbs ;)

So, not only could I watch my TV on my back patio, on a boat, and in my pool... but since it's 92lbs, I could also use it for exercise!

I def. wouldn't trust a tarp to protect my TV either. But, I probably wouldn't even leave a fairly easy-to-steal/vandalize item that cost $3K outside!

Not only would one have to worry about moisture... but most electronics warn you not to leave them in direct sunlight.

@B.V. There are plenty of outside areas that are well protected so you cant just steal something. there are plenty of outside bars, or country clubs, plenty of buildings have courtyards that are "inside" the building"

Yes. I can see ads coming from everywhere: at building corners, a hot dog stall, a bus stop. You name it.

i read these comments every time just to see the loony toons stuff that some people post. hilarious. all kinds of interesting things worthy of comment (who would have a tablet and not have the cleaner? can't wait for the samsung remote; the ear buds are going in my ears as soon as i can get my hands on them) and we have people taking shots at each other. off-topic has been re-defined. keep it up! this is great comedy.
