It's got a cop motor, it's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks ... and now it has a infrared night vision camera, automatic license plate reader, and dashboard touchscreen.
This souped-up Chevy Caprice is the LAPD’s future cruiser, enabling cops to track down suspects with the greatest of comfort. The vehicle is operated by a central computer system that runs everything from the light bar to the air conditioning, and the computer itself is stowed in the trunk, so cops don’t have to fumble with a laptop to run your DMV record. The seats are molded to fit a holstered gun and radio, so they don’t uncomfortably bulge on the driver’s lower back, and it has cutouts to accommodate a suspect’s cuffed hands.
The car can exchange data via thumb drives, WiFi and an experimental wireless-mesh network, which the video tour below curiously does not explain in detail. It can even pick up suspects’ footprints in the dark, for crying out loud.Along with those tech goodies, it sports a behemoth 6.0 liter V8 engine, normally found in heavy-duty Chevrolet trucks, which provides 355 hp and 384 foot-pounds of torque. The Caprice can reach 60 mph in under 6 seconds. It even has an extra battery, just in case.
Even without all that, it is definitely cooler than a Crown Vic. Check it out.

Here is the wave of the future. The Police car will have bluetooth. The Police car can reach out to the other car and read its black box and gather data. A laser can read the license plate and the bluetooth can get all the driving details of the driver, remaining gas, the VIN, etc. If the car has built in cell-phone bluetooth features, the police are can speak to the driver directly. At the end, as the Police car follows the driver, the Police driver can gradually slow the car down remotely or even stop it.
Of course as this develops in the future, the bad guys will develop the better "FUZZ BUSTER 3000". It will cause the Police car computer to crash and the Police car itself to stop. Illegal yes, but somebody will invent it and sell it too.
So, for all those who say: "What happened to my tax return?" "So, why can't we afford healthcare for those who can't afford it"
"How did we get this 14 trillion dollar debt?"
This.
Not to be a downer or anything, but AFAIK most cities are undergoing a hiring freeze for most public workers, if not straight-out layoffs. Is there really a need or demand for this?
wow impressive. but bad for the bad guys. yes im sure most of not all cop cars will have this soon. but criminals will find ways to counter it like always.
@PuffNStuff326: For now, this is only the LAPD's newest cruiser. The real problem is with the elite of this country who do not pay the taxes they should, and with the government leaders who spend too much money on nothing. There are massive holes in defense spending and corporate bailouts and handouts that need to be brought under control, not to mention the two wars we've been fighting for what, about 10 years now?
We should have toppled Saddam, the suspect for WMDs, and then once we found him, had US citizens vote for a replacement who would organize things into a proper democratic election. We'd have been out in barely a few years, with a new ally from the deal. Of course, we could have forgone going to war entirely, or gone for REAL humanitarian purposes, such as the many countries in which genocide and TRUE crimes against humanity run rampant - at least then the people wouldn't mind the debt as much, because we'd know it came from fighting for good causes.
@JTWStephens: There should be. Public workers really should receive MORE money from the government, just as the government really should receive MORE money from the top 5% and stop subsidizing companies that are making exorbitant amounts of money even without their help. Police forces, schools, and infrastructure are deficient in many areas, and need to be improved.
The point of this vehicle is that IF the department has enough money when it comes time to buy new cruisers, this cruiser will allow them to do their jobs much more effectively and with less discomfort and hassle. With more help from this vehicle, officers will make fewer costly mistakes, and that can only be a good thing.
@onihikage
While I agree that subsidies should stop, including but not limited to all farm subsidies etc., I do not agree that raising taxes is a good idea. If making more money, means getting taxed so much that you end up making less money, then you have a dis-incentive to make that much more money.
And that is a bad thing, as it hurts the economy when people hold back from producing and making as much as they can. Economic strength comes from the flow of money. Money in motion is good, money standing still is bad.
Now, flipping taxes to be 'front end' via sales tax, instead of hidden in income taxes and business taxes, is much more honest, and effective. You don't pay taxes till you spend your money. Perfect. And then you make sure groceries and basic utilities and rent are non-taxed things, then people who are poor and can mostly only afford those three things, pay very little tax.
Also, while we are hurting economically, we should stop borrowing money from china, that we then give away to other countries for aid. Individuals can still donate of course, and Americans do and generally are very generous to people in need, but our taxes need to be spent fixing our country, not being funneled into corrupt regimes.
After getting a $574 ticket from a red light camera, I see how the city of LA (or at least Santa Monica) views it's citizens......as rolling money bags ripe for the thrashing. I'm sure this type of technology will be quickly adopted as one more way to chase down ticket revenue.
just goes to show they already figured out how to pay for these cars
