Soft and squishy robots are the future as evidenced by the printable hydraulic robot we saw earlier this week. But while walking robots are cool, swimming squishy robots that look like octopuses are so much better.
IEEE Spectrum created the adorable video above profiling the approximately $13 million robot octopus project that has been in the works for a few years now. Why build a robot that looks like an octopus? Because they can travel through water, they can head over rough terrain on the seafloor, and they can pick things up with their soft, squishy tentacles.
Also, they are adorable. The robot version isn’t quite as cute as the original, but we’ll give it a pass for now.
