At its core, the candle is just that–a beeswax candle. Around it is a shell containing what LuDela couldn’t resist calling a “Wi-Fire Smart Module,” allowing you to ignite and extinguish the candle from your phone on a whim.

More importantly, just one of LuDela’s candles contains more sensors than the rest of your candles combined. These sensors can detect changes in heat or movement, allowing the candle to automatically extinguish itself if it’s knocked over or is obstructed. It can even text you if something’s wrong.

LuDela’s promotional video demonstrates these features by showing how even people who insist on putting candles in all the most precarious positions possible in their house can still be saved from the dangers of a house fire.

While the idea of a smart candle is pretty ridiculous, burning candles are still responsible for almost 10,000 residential fires in the U.S. every year, according to the National Candle Association. A study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests that 85 percent of those fires could have been avoided if people had observed three basic rules: Never leave the candle unattended, never burn the candle near anything that might catch fire, and keep the candle out of the reach of children and pets.

Given that so many people still aren’t being smart with their candles, maybe it’s time to let the candles be smart instead.
