Meet Typhoon Francisco. This image, captured by NASA's Aqua earth-observing satellite, shows the storm picking up strength just southwest of Guam in the Pacific Ocean. It's expected to head toward Japan, possibly next week.

Typhoons are strong tropical cyclones that occur in the northwest region of the Pacific. The same storm in the Atlantic or the northeast Pacific would be called a hurricane.
