Hummingbirds are renowned for their blurringly fast wings and bright, delicate jewel-like colors. They are a pleasure to see visiting flowers in the garden on a warm spring day, but how do these dainty, quick birds manage when the weather isn’t so good?
In a new video from Deep Look, a series created by KQED San Francisco, scientists use high-speed video cameras and a wind tunnel to see how hummingbirds manage to stay aloft even in difficult conditions, like rain and 20 mile-per-hour winds.
They found that instead of just flapping their wings, hummingbirds move them in a mesmerizing figure-eight pattern, using their tail to stay steady and feed from a flower, even in a simulated storm.
