I'd like to say that I am outraged, furious, distressed, but it would be a lie. I am disappointed... If Popular Science has chosen to shut down the game, that is their choice. It is I think a bad choice, many organizations would kill for the loyal and involved following that PPX has, but it is still their choice. What is really disappointing is this lame story about it being a "two-year application". Seriously, SERIOUSLY?!?! Who do you think your audience is? You must know that the demographics of your subscriber/participant base would indicate we are NOT IDIOTS! You've spent however much money on building the leagues (which was a mistake, but whatever), you've been soliciting for enhancements and suggestions all the way up until about 3 weeks ago. It would have been much better to have just been straight with us; "Management has decided that there is no longer a business case for moving forward with PPX, the advertisement revenues are not offsetting the costs, therefor we have decided to shut it down." That would have been much more palatable than this tripe about "two-year application". It is offensive to me that you think so little of our intelligence. As my esteemed colleague has already said, "so long and thanks for all the fish", you won't be getting any more advertising revenue from me...
This is classic! cache.gawker.com/assets/images/consumerist/2009/04/3484111996_d15d16a3e6.jpg
I is HIGHLY unlikely that no one reaches 1 million by May first. Based on my analysis, Ashton Kutcher should reach the 1 million mark within 8.01 days, meaning by the 22nd of April. CNN is on a slower track putting them at 8.5 days, meaning either the 22nd or the 23rd. Ashton has a lot more momentum and his numbers have been growing on a steeper curve than either Brittany or CNN. It will be close, but my money is on this prop closing SHORT!
There are links to news stories inside the prop page, but here is one for you lazy types. www.wired.com/techbiz/media/news/2009/03/reuters_us_microsoft
Vulgarian, The logic of your argument is so faulty as to be ridiculous. You point out the prop movement chart on PPXCHAT as cause or exacerbator of waves. Yet the information on PPXCHAT is ALWAYS delayed by 5 minutes. What about the "Top Movers" page on PPX itself? This information is REAL-TIME, yet you don't make any mention of it in your argument. Why not propose removing all sources of information? PPX should make everyone comb through 100+ propositions individually to see if anything has moved, then the market would settle down for sure!
That's a short!
For all of you who went short on FLYINGCAR today based on the Moller Skycar news, I think you are being a bit myopic. Yesterday a prop based on a flying car closed LONG because that car was able to travel from England to Timbuktu. That car is currently for sale and is cheaper to buy and easier to operate than anything like the Moller Skycar will ever be. Do you really think that they are not going to receive orders for and produce more than 100 of this version of the Skycar? Stay short on FLYINGCAR and find out the hard way!
Time to resurrect one of my favorite threads! For those looking for a great place to invest their end of year bounty, look no further than LHC! Payout language states; "This proposition will pay off at POP$100 per share if the Large Hadron Collider is functional, sending beams in both directions and collecting data on the collisions by January 31, 2009." CERN put out a press release in December stating; “The top priority for CERN today is to provide collision data for the experiments as soon as reasonably possible,” said CERN Director General Robert Aymar. “This will be in the summer of 2009.” (emphasis added) The prop is currently in the high 40's you can make a quick 40k if you jump on this now. This prop belongs in the tidy bowl. Link to CERN press release here: www.interactions.org/cms/?pid=1027337
Just for the sake of argument, the "Closing Soon" section on PPXChat was updated about 4 days ago. The 31 props that are closing in the next 3 weeks are all listed with suggested directions.
