Hello, Ardi: New Oldest Humanoid Fossil A Million Years Older Than Lucy

By Susannah F. Locke Posted on 10.1.2009 24 Comments

This morning, scientists revealed an analysis of a female skeleton that seems to be the best example of early hominids around, about a million years older than the famous Lucy specimen that has been a prime example of early humanoids for about 40 years. New species Ardipithecus ramidus, which scientists nicknamed "Ardi," lived in the woodlands of present-day Ethiopia and had a blend of human and chimplike features.

exactly! there is insufficient evidence that carbon dating is an accurate method of finding the age of a fossil.

Recently Discovered Exoplanet Evidently Has Rains of Pebbles

By Clay Dillow Posted on 10.1.2009 10 Comments

Humans tend to imagine things we don't fully understand in our own image: for instance, we anthropomorphize God, most sci-fi movie aliens are some variation of a biped with two eyes, a nose and a mouth, and every planet Captain Kirk visits has an atmosphere just ripe for human respiration. But science tells us things are rarely so neat and tidy out in the great unknown, and just to prove how weird things can be out there, scientists at Washington University St.

I find the "anthropomorphize God" comment particularly insulting... There are plenty of perfectly rational people that believe in God.

Can This Chinese Farmer's DIY Helicopter Really Fly?

By Jeremy Hsu Posted on 8.7.2009 7 Comments

Anyone who dares to build a helicopter with wooden blades, a steel-pipe-reinforced frame, and a motorcycle engine deserves to go up in the thing. But the Chinese government has forbidden farmer Wu Zhongyuan from even attempting a test flight. We just want to see if the crazy contraption can fly.

Al Gore's Alliance For Climate Protection Begins Three-Year Ad Campaign

By Posted on 3.31.2008 4 Comments

As far as TV history goes, public service announcements will go down as a small but memorable slice of the great broadcast pie. The weeping Native American, brought to tears by the garbage strewn across his great country's highways. "Knowing is half the battle." "This is drugs; this is your brain on drugs." And so on. Now, Al Gore and his Alliance for Climate Protection group have begun a privately funded PSA of their own with hopes of rallying the general public to the cause of preventing a global climate crisis.

Evolution’s Most Effective Killer: Snake Venom

By Posted on 3.6.2008 19 Comments

As predators, snakes are missing a few key attributes. They have no legs to chase down their prey, no paws to knock down quarry, and no claws to hold their victims. But none of these deficiencies matters much, because evolution has handed snakes the ultimate weapon: venom. With it, the several hundred types of venomous snakes can kill or debilitate before their victims escape.
