    Super Undergarments

By Brett Zarda Posted on 4.2.2009 2 Comments

In 2007, Dwight Howard donned a Superman cape before leaping to victory in the slam dunk competition. In an attempt to defend his title this weekend (he came in second), Howard topped his own theatrics by entering a phone booth for his annual costume change. The basketball player-cum-superhero returned to the court to dunk, not in a regulation 10-foot basket, but in a 12-foot-high hoop. While it's natural to attribute such supernatural feats to Howard's freakish physical stature -- or perhaps to the cape around his neck -- it was actually the skintight clothing beneath the cape that produced the boldest and most easily quantifiable performance enhancement. An undergarment described as, not clothing, but equipment, the Adidas Techfit Powerweb contains carefully placed strips of thermoplastic urethane that stores energy like a spring, and lets athletes release it on their villain of choice.

This is some very cool sports science. I wonder how many professional athletes use this stuff. ______________________ http://www.thetotaltransformation.com

What's the Difference Between Artificial and Natural Flavors?

By Amanda Schupak Posted on 12.30.2008 4 Comments

Picking barbecue-flavor potato chips over salt-and-vinegar can be tough enough without having to choose between brands made with "natural flavors" and ones that are "artificially flavored." Natural flavors, you might think, are derived from the pure essence of a food's flavor, and as such are more authentic. But the term "natural" is misleading.

    Pull Off or Nod Off

By Mike Spinelli Posted on 2.3.2009 4 Comments

It’s late and you just want to get those last 100 miles of interstate behind you, drowsiness be damned. Bad idea. Recognizing that too many fatigued road-trippers end up in accidents, Mercedes-Benz developed software, dubbed Attention Assist, that monitors behavior and urges sleepy drivers to get some rest. The system will debut on two of the company’s 2010 luxury sedans, the redesigned midsize E-Class [concept design above] and its flagship S-Class.

Freezing the Heart to Save the Life

By Melinda Wenner Posted on 1.27.2009 10 Comments

At 3 p.m. last June 22, Pam Barco’s heart stopped. The 46-year-old ER clerk at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia was near the end of her shift when she felt dizzy, put her head down on her desk, and suddenly stopped breathing. A nearby co-worker saw Barco slump over and shouted, “Staff emergency!” Minutes later, a dozen doctors and nurses surrounded Barco’s body. They shocked her with a defibrillator. No response. They shocked her twice more. Nothing. Then: Beep. Beep. Beep.

    Wingman

By Eric Hagerman Posted on 1.14.2009 29 Comments

The warm autumn sun has burned a hole in the morning haze and opened up the sky above the South Foreland Lighthouse, a historic beacon along the White Cliffs of Dover, England. It marks the narrowest point of the English Channel. You can't quite make out where the sea meets the coast of France, a tantalizing 22 miles distant, but a little surface gauze won't interfere with what's coming across the Channel today.

    Running Against the Wind

By Posted on 2.12.2009 13 Comments

In summer 2007, Alexander Miller and Jan Lehmann, aerospace-engineering students at Stuttgart University in Germany, took on an unusual task: building a wind-powered vehicle that could race directly into the wind. A year later, their team unveiled its creation, the Ventomobile, which handily defeated the field at North Holland's Racing Aeolus, the first-ever track race between vehicles powered solely by wind.
