Energy shields haven't arrived just yet, but this magnetic heat shield could do nicely in the meantime. European researchers have created a magnetic field technology that can protect spacecraft from fiery atmospheric temperatures during reentry, and perhaps cut back on the need for traditional heat shields.

oh for gods' sake... None of that crap is going to happen!!! you know that collisions like this happen millions of times everyday in our upper atmosphere? We know they do but it's to random to observe. There will be no black hole, there will be no entropy... What there WILL be is the dawn of a whole new realm of science. Dark matter, Higgs Boson, Hyperspace travel, Dark energy, just to name a few. Stop being Drama Queens!!!
Nate Alder was scuba diving off the coast of Brazil when the idea struck him. It was 2006, and he was spending his summer break from Brigham Young University backpacking around the country and working on his advanced scuba certification. During one of the scuba seminars, he learned about how divers in cold climates pump argon gas into their dry suits for insulation. As a former snowboard instructor, he wondered if argon could be used to warm skiers and snowboarders too.
Could this be a secondary system for space suits?
Talk about a Eureka moment. Scientists at Sandia National Labs, seeking a means to create cheap and abundant hydrogen to power a hydrogen economy, realized they could use the same technology to "reverse-combust" CO2 back into fuel. Researchers still have to improve the efficiency of the system, but they recently demonstrated a working prototype of their "Sunshine to Petrol" machine that converts waste CO2 to carbon monoxide, and then syngas, consuming nothing but solar energy.
This has a few applications on Earth, but MANY applications for space colonization. Coupled with fuel-cell and Solar technology we could virtually solve the power problem with running a lunar colony, or gods forbid, a Martian colony.
If the idea of turning consumers into true cyborgs sounds creepy, don't tell Intel researchers. Intel's Pittsburgh lab aims to develop brain implants that can control all sorts of gadgets directly via brain waves by 2020.
Also: Think of the medical appilcations of this. Now instead of asking "Where does it hurt?" and "On a scale from 1 to 10 how much does it hurt" We can do a simple med-scan and find out EXACTLY what is damaged. this saves doctors from being forced to "Wait and see" what is going to happen with a patient. I Love this idea.

Star Trek introduced the world to a wide range of fictional technology, most of which, like beaming or warp drive, will likely remain fiction. However, a team of scientists from the University of Canada has taken the phaser, the show's famous stun-laser, out of the TV and into reality. Unfortunately, right now it only works on worms.
Um... Warp drive is about to be figured out kids... Since Dr. Alcuberri created a metric for warp bubble energy usage there have been loads of scientists working on all aspects of warp bubble theory. From Sheer on the ship, to perception of photons from inside the bubble. I wish there were more reports on Warp Bubble theory so the research would get more attention.

Until today, Google's Chrome OS has been little more than a wordy concept. Now, finally, we truly know what it is, what it looks like, and how it works. Here's the breakdown.
I think the really important thing about the release of this OS is that it's the first real step in a software to push Hard Drives out, and SS drives in. Being that a few netbooks already have solid state, albeit small amounts, is an important step. Personally I truly hope that Hard Drives are just dropped completely within 1 to 2 years; I think Chrome OS is gonna make that happen.
Dungeon masters with deep, dark pockets no longer need imagine how the venerable tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons might play on a futuristic multi-touch platform. Six students at Carnegie Mellon University recently released a video showing off their D&D concept for Microsoft's Surface Table, complete with a storyboard slideshow and rolling the virtual 20-sided die.
Oh my god. I want one. Now. SERIOUSLY! I have been playing table top RPG's my whole life! The problem is that they are a dying breed with the advent of MMORPG's. If this gets released, it would usher in a whole new era for us old school table toppers! Seriously. This need to be in stores, tomorrow. ~S
