    The World's Fastest Remote-Control Car

By Gregory Mone Posted on 7.6.2009 9 Comments

After a motorcycle crash, Nic Case found a safer, but still thrilling, hobby: building radio-controlled cars. At 161 mph, his latest just smashed the world record.

That is indeed pretty cool. What is the world record for a "nitro" (glow fuel) powered R.C. car? Maybe I could take three or four jet engines, put them in a full size streamliner, hook radio controls to IT and put the record so far out of reach no one would ever break it.Surely that wouldn't be considered cheating, would it?

NASA Tests Another Astronaut Escape System for Launch Disasters

By Jeremy Hsu Posted on 7.10.2009 9 Comments

NASA successfully tested a launch abort system that can eject astronauts away from a launch pad disaster. It's the alternate escape system for the Ares rockets that are slated to launch astronauts to the space station and the moon, assuming that the Constellation program manages to survive the political turmoil surrounding budget overruns and engineering problems.

    Building a Bigger Bird

By Posted on 1.22.2008 6 Comments

Courtesy airliners.net Having passed its emergency-evacuation test last weekend, the Airbus A380 is officially certified to haul a staggering 853 passengers—that's how many people safely escaped a darkened test aircraft in less than 80 seconds. The A380's capacity puts it well past its next-largest rival, Boeing's venerable 747, which has held the title of world's largest active commercial jet for almost 36 years. When the A380 takes to the skies on its first commercial flight with Singapore Airlines later this year, it will probably max out at around 500 people (800-plus is for a nightmarish single-class setup). So how does an aircraft this big get itself built, let alone get in the air?  Check out this cool time-lapse video of an A380 assembly to find out, and stick around for the end—the double-time painting process is amazing to watch. —John Mahoney

Ten Things You Didn't Know About the Apollo 11 Moon Landing

By Posted on 7.13.2009 30 Comments

This month marks the 40th anniversary of humankind's first steps on the moon. Auspiciously timed is Craig Nelson's new book, Rocket Men--one of the most detailed accounts of the period leading up to the first manned moon mission. Here, we have ten little-known Apollo 11 facts unearthed by Nelson during his research.

I agree with joker5delta that argueing with the knuckleheads is futile. The majority of these clowns couldn't find the moon in the sky with both hands and a road map. They only do so to get people riled up.You know these people, they are the ones who would argue with a stop sign about things of which they are ignorant. Highdobb, these people are the LAST people you want at the landing site. They would be stealing everything that isn't nailed down, throwing empty beer squeeze-bulbs everywhere and trying to piss on a leg of the lander (THAT I would like to see them try,if you follow my thinking). Gosh, what a heady time in our history that was!! Summer of '67,Woodstock,all the manned missions that, with our technology at the time, shouldn't have been possible. But somehow, with spit and determination,we managed to pull it off.We could use a good chunk of that spit and determination right now.

So We Put a Jet Turbine On Our ATV...

By Mike Haney Posted on 6.30.2009 18 Comments

Don your Nomex firesuit and industrial-grade ear protection: It’s time to soak in some nature at 60mph. PopSci staff photographer/madman John Carnett has realized an unholy dream long in the making: an ATV powered entirely by a jet turbine. And then he took it to the woods and pushed it to the limit; to the edge of logic, control and sanity.

Photo-Sensitive Threads Turn Clothing Into Cameras

By Posted on 6.18.2009 10 Comments

There was a time when a camera was its own thing. Now my phone's a camera, my computer's a camera, and it looks like pretty soon my pants could be a camera too. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have created a thread with bundles of photo-sensitive fiber optic cables inside. The cables transmit light back to a computer, effectively turning each thread into a camera.

    A. Find "Them"

University of California at Berkeley Where: Berkeley, Calif. Department: Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) SETI@home taps the power of thousands of ordinary PCs over the Web to create, in effect, one of the most powerful supercomputers anywhere. It analyzes data from radio telescopes looking for signals from intelligent life. Berkeley students help improve the search algorithms and refine the software that ties all the computers together.

    New BMW's Drive Themselves (Almost)

By Mike Spinelli Posted on 6.4.2009 6 Comments

A new autonomous vehicle-control system on the BMW drawing board could prolong drivers' lives behind the wheel, without sacrificing their own and others' safety. That's good news for elderly drivers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports crash fatalities among drivers over the age of 70 fell 21 percent between 1997 and 2006, despite a 10 percent increase in that population. The decline is likely due to elderly drivers self-limiting their driving. But hanging up their keys means a loss of independence and lower quality of life for older drivers -- especially in rural areas.

Yeah, those "anti-drunk driving" sniffers are really great.Tennessee made me put one in my car after my ninth DWI.They thought they had me under control but I fooled them,by God.I would still go to my favorite watering hole every night and get splashed. When it came time to wobble, zig and zag my way home,I just had one of my non- drinking friends blow in the device for me and I was on my way.Rather renders the device worse than useless, doesn't it? The above is totally fictional.I just chose that method of illustrating the fact that there is always a way around restrictions if you want to find one bad enough.Yeah,I know, thats tottaly off topic but the conversation was heading in that direction anyway. On topic, how many old people do you know who could be helped by a "self-driving" Beemer can actually afford what will turn out to be a $75,000 car?Not very many I bet and you can be sure ain't anybody going to be handing them out.
