Modified Algae Produce Clean, Easy Hydrogen

By Clay Dillow Posted on 11.16.2009 15 Comments

Algae get a lot of airtime as a possible future source of biofuels to wean us from dirty fossil fuels, but even biofuels don't go so far as to eliminate hydrocarbons (and their constituent carbon emissions) from our energy diet. But a different use for algae could prove a better solution to the future of fuel. A new process that produces clean, sustainable hydrogen from photosynthesis in algae could change all that. The means of manufacturing clean, usable hydrogen has heretofore required a high-energy process that drastically dilutes the upside.

UK Government Plans to Monitor Social Networks, Chatrooms, and Online Games

By Jeremy Hsu Posted on 11.9.2009 12 Comments

UK netizens may find their online activities under ever-greater scrutiny in the near future. The UK government has pushed ahead with a proposal to require monitoring of Internet usage, including social networks such as Facebook and conversations within online games. The new UK law would require communication firms to hold records of who contacted whom, rather than the actual contents of online conversation. About £2 billion ($3.34 billion) would go toward compensating the firms for the technical challenge of collecting the data.

Oh dear god. What are we doing? Heading back towards that black and destructive hole that once consumed the world during the McCarthy era? What do you want from people? The worlds governments can already do whatever they want without us knowing. Now they're going to just blatantly tell us we are in a cyber prison? Do I really need to start using parchment again? I havent trained my pigeons yet. Its gonna be years before I can send bmail.

Space Hotel Reportedly On Track for 2012 Opening, Already Has Paying Guests

By Jeremy Hsu Posted on 11.4.2009 17 Comments

Anyone with a cool $4 million and change might consider doing what 43 other people have done, and sign up for an orbital space vacation in 2012 with Galactic Suite Space Resort. The Barcelona-based company plans to open the first space hotel if all goes according to plan.

Newly Discovered Magnetic Monopole Particles Flow Like Electric Currents

By Stuart Fox Posted on 10.15.2009 7 Comments

In 1931, physicist Paul Dirac hypothesized that on the quantum level, magnetic charge must exist in discrete packets, or quanta, in the same way that electric energy exists in a photon. This implies the existence of magnetic monopoles: particles that have a single magnetic charge, or polar identity -- north or south. For 78 years, Dirac's speculation interested only hardcore theorists, because the conjecture failed to find any expression in observed phenomena. All magnets had two poles, one north and one south, inextricably attached to each other.

Cheap Artificial Hymens: the Easy Way to Revirginate

By Susannah F. Locke Posted on 10.7.2009 12 Comments

It only takes about 20 minutes after the last time you had sex to become a "virgin" again. That's if you've shelled out $29 for the Artificial Virginity Hymen. The product has been getting some press, after conservative Egyptian politicians said they want the product banned. They're concerned that brides might use the product to fake their virginity, according to a report by the Associated Press.

But dont you see how is allows for complete and utter lies? Screwing around and sleeping around is your business. But my problem is the complete support for dishonesty. And besides what do you know? The women that break the rules are...BREAKING the rules. So this is a quick fix right? Oh - I did something stupid and now just for my own self preservation Im going to lie to everyone. Its an ethics thing. Do you really want to undermine the wrong in it? Theres a reason why rules exist. Even if some people cant understand why they're there. You have no idea. I mean lots of people will have the same mentality as the one you illustrated for yourself. The reason for that isnt because of actual interaction with the people but because you see stupid news reports of extreme cases where people run from their families. The other 95% is different. Please talk to a Muslim. Find out. My words mean nothing as a comment but if you actually hear it from a Muslim for yourself it will have more substance. I leave this in peace.

Do people really want to increase infidelity? Is sex really that much more important than honor? I mean, I understand being a whore, not caring what your state is before marriage, or something like that but making yourself a fake virgin? Why do you care if you wanted to lose it in the first place? This kinda makes me sick. I thought girls were already slutty enough. Makes me lose faith in finding someone with principles, ethics, or dignity. Eygpt banned it. At least they had the balls to stand up for honor. And for the married. Being married is being honorable. If you lose your husband or divorce at least you married instead of messing around. You were adult enough to take the next step. I dont know why being a virgin is an issue. Muslim women have far more dignity than what you are describing Thaimed. I dont know where you mind is at but if you know a Muslim woman you know they have huge amounts of dignity and honor and the guts to keep themselves strong and resistant to screwing around. Marriage is about being honest. Why the hell would you want to make yourself a virgin again if you were married before? You wanna start your second marriage with a lie? Thaimed the Muslim women I know arent the way you described. Either what you said is a stupid attempt to make em look bad or you have no idea. The Muslim women I know - make me want to be a better man.

Real Genius: Eight Brilliant Inventors Still in High School

By Posted on 8.24.2009 14 Comments

Every year, instead of prepping for prom or hanging out at the mall, thousands of high-school students are busy in labs, basements and classrooms finding fresh solutions to age-old problems. We’ve scoured the country to find the brightest among them, settling on eight teen talents who make Thomas Edison (whose first patented invention didn’t come until the ripe old age of 21) look like a late bloomer.

Here is what you will need: A subscription An Internet Connection Simple, thats for sure but how will the subscription play out? Will the price of being able to play a game you dont own be say $15 a month? Maybe more? That would be like paying $15 for an MMO. You bought the game but you cant play it unless you pay more and more. People like to own what they play. Cultures do change but will this? So many questions but this is old news. Took Popsci a freakin long time eh? haha. This may change everything. Thats true. We'll just have to wait.

New Army Rifle Fires Laser-Guided Smart Bullets With Onboard Targeting Chips

By Dan Smith Posted on 6.5.2009 23 Comments

It would be hard to describe a bullet as smart, but what if that bullet was laser-guided, radio-controlled, and carried an onboard targeting CPU? The US Army has announced the creation of the XM25 rifle, which can fire a new type of explosive round that fit that exact description. Imagine the implications: hitting targets inside buildings or hiding around walls. Whoa.

A Photon-Powered Nanomotor Made Out of DNA

By Posted on 6.5.2009 5 Comments

Nanomotors hold the promise of one day powering tiny robots that could do everything from fighting viruses to cleaning up toxic waste. Thanks to some scientists at the University of Florida, that day is getting rapidly closer; and some of these robots might end up solar-powered. A new paper published in the journal Nano Letters details how the researchers created the first light-powered nanomotor out of a photoreactive chemical and a short length -- only 31 base pairs -- of DNA.
