    Flying the Coal-Fired Skies

By Posted on 1.16.2009 34 Comments

In the not-so-distant future, cars could run on electricity, power plants on wind and solar energy, and city buses on zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells. But airplanes? Those just might run on coal.

As an ex aircraft mechanic I would fill up my A-10 with hundreds of gallons of jet fuel for just a 2 hour training mission. Let me rephrase that... For a training mission that jet would use more fuel in 2 hours than I would use in a year. With that in mind the US is terrified of putting it proverbial eggs into one basket. We depend so much on foreign oil to not only to fuel the citizens of the US but also the military. What would happen if we went to war (with any country) and lost our middle east oil connections. Is that the time to start exploring alternative fuel sources? I don't like the coal idea either, it's dirty and dangerous and it's hurting our environment. I like Tom M's comments on recycling what we have. Keep in mind the Air Force is here to protect the country and it's people and it needs massive amounts of fuel to do that.

    Salt Water Rising

By the Editors of E - The Environmental Magazine Posted on 1.5.2009 28 Comments

Dear EarthTalk: With all the talk of rising seas, what could happen to the rivers that flow into the oceans? Will they reverse flow? Will rising seas back up into fresh water lakes? And what happens to our groundwater should saltwater flow backwards into it? -- Sandy Smith, concerned Michigander

Maybe the media should scare people. Scare them to carpool, shut off lights, TVs, and computers when not in use. Oh, scare the to recycle. It's terrifying to think where the world will be in 50 years with people like kingoftown in it.

  • Boeing Advanced Tactical Laser

    By Posted on 11.23.2008 Comments

Truck-mounted IED-destroying lasers have already been tested in Iraq, but firing lasers from an airplane is a more difficult proposition. The first successful test of a plane-mounted laser gun came on August 7, when Boeing’s 18-ton chemical laser fired a beam from a C-130H aircraft and destroyed a three-by-three-foot target on the ground. It was the first time all of the ATL’s lab-tested pieces came together to vaporize a target. Why use a beam instead of a bomb?

There is no way that laser can have a constant output of high energy. More likely the beam is a burst of energy focused on a target. Probably not too efficient for fire lines.

Knock Knock: Who's Funnier? Republicans or Democrats?

By Rachel Durfee Posted on 4.2.2009 15 Comments

If a man walks into a bar….who laughs? Liberals or conservatives? Dan Ariely, a psychologist at Duke University, and Elisabeth Malin, a student at Mount Holyoke College, looked into just that question in a recent Boston study. The two came up with a list of 22 jokes – conventional, quirky, corny, clever, etc. – and tracked the reactions of about 300 people who were asked to rate the jokes on a scale of 1 (not funny at all) to 9 (hilarious).

Did anyone laugh at the second joke seriously? I've always considered myself a liberal of sorts. I didn't get the second joke at all, and I like jokes.
