    The Race to 1,000 MPH

By Mike Spinelli Posted on 9.24.2009 26 Comments

The sun doesn’t rise over the Black Rock Desert in Nevada; it ignites. One minute the blaze-orange glow of dawn is cascading down the sulfur-rich Jackson and Kamma mountain ranges, tinting the prehistoric lakebed a million shades of pink. The next, it’s full celestial throttle. By 6:30, the sun is blinding and the heat is ratcheting up.

Can only imagine what the resulting mess would look like if you crashed at 1000mph. I doubt there'd be more than a red smear on the track.

Swiss Solar Plane to Circle the Globe with No Fuel

By Anna Maria Jakubek Posted on 7.2.2009 5 Comments

As environmental concerns increasingly shape the direction of technology, the future of aviation is no exception: scientists have been looking to replace fuel-guzzling aircraft with solar-powered variants, an innovation that, in addition to passing the green test, would also enable planes to linger in the sky for longer.

Not sure where this one's going , but I do know that if this technology made commercial available... no way would I want to fly in a plane with no fuel...lol

    Foreskin for Clear Skin?

By Julia Wallace Posted on 11.21.2008 18 Comments

It sounds like just another uber-meltable cheese product, but Vavelta is actually miles away from anything you'd want to put in your mouth. It's a radical new treatment for facial pitting, scarring, and wrinkles made out of—what else?—newborns' foreskins. Foreskins have long been treasured by cosmetic dermatologists because they are rich in fibroblasts, tiny cells that play a crucial role in healing wounds and generating collagen and connective tissue.

I think the babies might have something to say about this .... especially the female ones.

    A House That Walks

By John Brandon Posted on 11.6.2008 19 Comments

Houses are normally fairly stationary objects, and that's not considered a bad thing. But innovation never stands still, and a new prototype house that can walk on six legs has been built . The house is ten feet high, powered by solar panels, and is outfitted with a kitchen, toilet, bed, and wood stove. Last week, the house, a collaboration between MIT and the Danish design collective N55, took a journey through Cambridgeshire in England as part of an art project at the Wysing Art Center. Designed to move at the muscle speed of a human, the house walked at about five kilometers an hour around the 11-acre campus. (See video)

I see no point to this invention. Why would anyone want a house that walks, especially around London! Then there's the issue of plumbing, electrics and the idiot that would want to live in tin can! This gets a thumbs down from me even if it is a prototype.

Zero to 1,000 in 40 Seconds

By Mike Spinelli Posted on 10.23.2008 13 Comments

Back in 1997, RAF wing commander Andy Green proved breaking the sound barrier on land wouldn't destroy the universe. Now, a successor to the ThrustSSC, the jet car Green piloted a decade ago on Nevada's Black Rock Desert, is in the works. Target: 1,000 mph.

But if it goes wrong , there'll be little more than a red smear across the salt flats. But I'm sure they'll make it.

    A Wearable Motorcycle

By Annemarie Conte and Esther Haynes Posted on 9.24.2008 49 Comments

The transportation program at the Art Center College of Design has produced legendary car designers, including BMW chief of design Chris Bangle and Henrik Fisker, the creator of the Fisker Karma electric supercar. But this year, after professor Bumsuk Lim’s inaugural motorcycle-design class, the buzz is all about bikes, especially Jake Loniak’s exoskeleton motorcycle concept Deus Ex Machina.

Love it. Hope the guy gets it into production. This invention would make a great new sport when raced.
