    A Map of Death

By Brooke Borel Posted on 12.18.2008 3 Comments

Geographers from the University of South Carolina have created a map of the United States depicting a county-level representation of natural-hazard-related deaths -- the first systematic attempt to look at mortality in this way. While highly publicized media reports on catastrophes like Hurricane Katrina and the wildfires in Northern California may lead the public to believe these disasters are the most deadly, it is actually extreme weather -- the very hot summers and very cold winters -- that cause the most deaths.

Making Glass in a Grill [With Video!]

By Theodore Gray Posted on 4.9.2009 10 Comments

All the components of glass can be found in two places: the beach and the laundry room. It’s possible to melt pure white-silica beach sand into glass, but only at temperatures of 3,000 to 3,500°F. Washing soda, lime or borax (a traditional laundry aid) added to the sand disrupts the quartz-crystal structure of silica and reduces the required temperature to a more practical, though still dangerous, 2,000°F, which I achieved with a backyard grill and a vacuum cleaner.

Now I'm no scientist, but if you hooked up a few more vacuums and a wee bit of plutonium....

    Gaseous State

By Molika Ashford Posted on 9.18.2008 39 Comments

In a lush pasture near Buenos Aires, this cow and its compatriots are digesting important information: how much methane—a greenhouse gas 20 times as potent as carbon dioxide—is released by the country’s 55 million bovines. Researchers from Argentina's National Institute of Agricultural Technology connected inflatable tanks to the cows’ first stomach, where methane is made, through a small hole between their ribs.

It's pretty obvious that cows are attempting to destroy the planet through their polystomatic methane creation mechanisms speeding up global warming. This bovine plot must be stopped, eat a steak every day and we shall prevail. Vegans, vegetarians and whatever you call yourselves who eat poultry and fish but not red meat, you are either with us or against us.....you've been warned.
