There's a lot to be thankful for in the future. Gather 'round the table, all you Navy Sea Lions, Jazz Bots, Star Wars enthusiasts and ethical scientists. Today is a day for futuristic feasting. (Get the details, and win the t-shirt, after the jump).

Okay, try number three to comment. I commented twice before, and they are in my profile page, but not posted here. So trying one last time before giving up. Maybe I am not turkey shirt worthy.

    The Worst Jobs in Science

By Jason Daley Posted on 1.23.2009 1 Comments

It might seem sad, after years of study, to wind up gathering sewer rats or burning great, stinking heaps of urine samples and bloody gauze. But that’s the path some professionals choose—and you’re lucky they did.

    Message In A Bottle

By Posted on 1.23.2009 11 Comments

Given the choice, you probably wouldn't risk sailing 11,500 miles from San Francisco to Sydney in a boat handmade of 20,000 plastic water bottles. But David de Rothschild, the founder of the nonprofit educational organization Adventure Ecology, sees such a vessel as the perfect way to "beat waste" by promoting new uses for recycled plastic while dramatizing the problem of ocean debris. Next month, de Rothschild and a crew of scientists will sail the Plastiki, a 60-foot catamaran, to environmental hotspots including Bikini Atoll, the former atomic-bomb testing site, and Tuvalu, an island rapidly disappearing under rising seas.

Great idea! Love to see pics of the actual boat when ready. Bookmarked the site and will check in on it from time to time when the site is ready. http://www.creativecompulsions.com Knowledge is not information, it is transformation. ~ Osho ~

    A Conversation with Len Fisher

By Laura Silver Posted on 1.15.2009 69 Comments

Chances are you've played Rock, Paper, Scissors, but how do you calculate your strategy, if you have one at all? In Rock, Paper, Scissors: Game Theory in Everyday Life, physicist Len Fisher points out that putting yourself in your opponent's mindset is a key to success in the game.

"The best thing you can do in Rock, Paper, Scissors is to randomize the throws." No kidding? Best way to play a random game is to be random? Good thing I don't always pick paper. Knowledge is not information, it is transformation. ~ Osho ~

Do a Little Dance, Make a Little Dash...

By Brett Zarda Posted on 10.17.2008 9 Comments

Usain Bolt is freaking fast. Usain Bolt is so freaking fast, so much more so than all those other freaking fast, that he had room to taunt his competitors in a 100 meter dash. We’ll repeat that for emphasis: in a 100 meter dash. Despite a victory dance mid-race, Bolt still broke his own world record lowering it from 9.72 sec to 9.69 sec. But what if he had sprinted through the tape? According to an astrophysicist, Bolt would’ve done something never done before in sport.

    The Latest Man-Made Organs

By Elizabeth Svoboda Posted on 9.18.2008 6 Comments

Almost 100,000 people languish on organ-transplant waiting lists. But new tissue-fabrication techniques should make swapping in a man-made liver as easy as snapping Lego bricks into place. Blood vessels Method: 3-D printer When: 5 years Gabor Forgacs, a tissue engineer at the University of Missouri, is making blood-vessel networks by culturing three types of vessel cells and loading them into a fridge-size bioprinter. This machine prints out the cells to build capillaries in preprogrammed patterns.

If in 5 years the blood vessels are perfected, would #2 & 3 still be 10 - 15 years away or could the first success make the next ones reality sooner. Knowledge is not information, it is transformation. ~ Osho ~
