Running to the Beat of Your Heart

By Brett Zarda Posted on 10.9.2008 4 Comments

Most avid runners have their 'song': "Chariots of Fire", "Don't Stop Believing", "Freefalling". But is it the terribly clichéd lyrics or the beat itself that provides inspiration? The Yamaha BodiBeat is part MP3 player, part heart-rate monitor, and part metronome for your workout. The gadget serves as a personal trainer and DJ by selecting songs with the beats per minute necessary to keep you going. Armed with a setlist of Journey and Sublime, and in search of a nine-minute mile, we tested the device on the hills of San Francisco.

That's a pretty wicked idea! I try to go to the gym 5 times a week and i have a hard time with the music. For some reason my gym plays easy listening cr*p which is horrible to work out to, but when i bring my own music I get so into it I spend more time changing songs than working out properly. The thing does look pretty bulky though, in the article it says its small but looking at it next to the earphones it doesn't look like something i'd enjoy packing around, unless its exercise I'm after of course and who wants that :) Free Music

    Build a Wireless Audio Streamer

By Posted on 7.14.2008 15 Comments

Here’s the scenario: You have a thousand MP3 music files sitting on your home computer—which is great when you’re actually sitting at your computer but a lot less useful when you’re in the kitchen or living room. What you need is a dedicated device in another room that can pull songs wirelessly from your PC’s music library and play them through its own speakers. Several off-the-shelf products can handle this task, such as Logitech’s Squeezebox; unfortunately, they start at around $300.

I actually already am using a cheaper solution. I have an old Tungsten pda (hey you got to have a free old computer i get a free old pda) and i got a bluetooth adapter for it and a bluetooth transmitter for the computer. I have speakers around various parts of my house (fairly large house). Then i just plug the pda into the headphones jack and stream using the network and Real Player for Palm OS. Total cost for the bluetooth adapter and transmitter: $130. Moshable Music

Can a Swimsuit Be Too Good?

By Posted on 3.27.2008 21 Comments

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/design/Can_a_Swimsuit_Be_Too_Good'; Even we didnt guess it would be this good. When I wrote last month about Speedos latest swimsuit—an extremely high-tech full-body wonder—three world records had already been broken by LZR-clad swimmers. Coincidence? Maybe. But, after eight more records fell in the past month, the suit is causing some serious waves.

Great point but where should they draw the line? If something has to be below a certain point of well designed or all designed the same way we end up with a bunch of boring excuses like nascar. Moshable Music

    The Stadium of Tomorrow

By Posted on 7.16.2008 6 Comments

Now that fans can enjoy high-def sports action from their living rooms, stadium owners need to offer more to potential patrons than $8 beer. What can you expect from the stadium of the future? Comfortable seats close to the action, interactive screens that provide real-time game stats, sustainable design, and architecture that directs the roar of the home crowd onto the field.

How to Make Convincing Fake-Gold Bars

By Posted on 3.14.2008 18 Comments

On Wednesday, the BBC reported that millions of dollars in gold at the central bank of Ethiopia has turned out to be fake: What were supposed to be bars of solid gold turned out to be nothing more than gold-plated steel. They tried to sell the stuff to South Africa and it was sent back when the South Africans noticed this little problem.

I read in a magazine about 5 years back that a company in europe designed a game people played on their phones. It was basically tag using the gps features. Your phone beeped when another player got within your range and you got various weapons defensive stuff that would affect that range. Then you had to catch them or get so close to them to score points. Their phone would beep to so that signaled the chase off. The europeans are way ahead of us as far as cell phone technology but I look forward to some of the sweet games that can come from it. Moshable Music
