We're all about the future here at PopSci; we put the pieces together and deliver the news and nuggets you need to know to stay on top of where this world (and universe, and beyond) is headed. This week, the future's looking like quite the wild party--water from space, libidinous rats, and transforming UAVs. What's not to love? (Get the details, and win the t-shirt, after the jump).

Guess This Part, Win a Tool

By Vin Marshall Posted on 11.16.2009 75 Comments

Since we inaugurated Guess This Tool, you've all proven way too hard to stump, so for this week's contest, we're mixing it up a bit and giving you a mystery part rather than a tool.

Good guesses everyone! We had you stumped for a while there, but OldReliable got it first with "11/16/09 at 8:43 pm: That isn't a weight or locking nut, it's a weld-in tank flange." Then a bunch of other people got it later on: bdbartie is right. RMORGAN is right. Azorus is right, and @Racer609 is right. @Pete43 is sort of right. OldReliable, I'll email you today to get your real name and snail mail address, and we'll ship off your prize! Keep up the great guessing! We'll see all of you in our next round of Guess This Tool. Guess This Obscure Tool, Win More Tools: Part Deux

By Vin Marshall Posted on 11.16.2009 24 Comments

Last week, we inaugurated a new challenge for you here on PopSci.com that lets you show off your deep tool knowledge and walk away with not only our abiding respect, but a less obscure tool of your own. Here's how it works: We post a picture of a strange object from my shop, maybe a clue or two, and you guess what it is in the comments section below. The first and most precise among you to guess correctly will win the prize. This week, it’s a 30-foot Stanley FatMax tape measure. Pretty sweet.
