The latest breakthrough in the burgeoning field of birth-order research reveals that parents discipline older kids much more severely than the younger ones. My own thoroughly unscientific poll also finds that this experience is common: Four out of five friends felt that hell yeah, younger siblings got away with murder. Well, not murder per se, but other transgressions such as sneaking home at 5 AM, shoplifting car stereos from Caldor, and smearing Vaseline on the family toilet seat.
Like many young people of my generation, I had to develop my own kind of mental and emotional dodge ball skills of a sort of mentally and emotionally switching gears or train of thought tracks in order to escape extreme parental punishment in the form of my much bigger and stronger mother or father when they pulled off their pants belt to use like a bull whip on my body. Once, when my father was stationed in Darmstadt in the former West Germany, I found out what the slang word for sex meant, the f**k word, my father made me tell him where I had learned of that word and proceeded to beat me for a solid eternity it seemed like to me in my small bedroom in the apartment our family lived in on post there. It was entirely legal then to beat your kids, or any other parents kids too, or for a husband to slap his wife around too if she "misbehaved". It affected me so much that I totally withdrew and became extremely introverted and to this day I cannot have a successful male/female relationship because if it and their attitudes they beat into me a total abject terror or parental punishment. I helped to end legal wife or female beating in Germany, Texas and Georgia some years ago, helping to get it made illegal because it is torture, deliberate physical torture that creates permanent psycholocal and emotional harm in human beings or any other animal similar to us in biology.
It is well known how we humans respond to immediate stress—through a phenomenon we share with all animals known as fight or flight. During these times of increased threat, our bodies' systems work in concert to raise our heart rate, pump adrenaline, and sharpen our focus. Now scientists working at Northwestern University have discovered that these responses may be coordinated by special stress-receptor neurons, rather than in each cell individually.
It would seem that this could also be the cause or pathways for the development of diseases like Lou Gehrigs disease. Nearly all the military people from the First Gulf War who complain of the symptoms called "Gulf War Syndrome" seem to all have a class of symptoms that could be the precursor develoments of Lou Gehrigs disease. Because the very deep sleep below the levels of brain wave activity associated with dream states is needed for the least active periods of brain neuron activity so that mainenance of the nerve cell very complex neurotransmitter manufacturing sites can be performed when message nerve impulse traffic is at a minimum during this deep sleeping state where you don't even dream. Your body needs this sleep state for complete rest and just a few minutes during every sleep period is needed to let you feel totally satisfied and alive the next day. If you don't get enough of this kind of deep sleep state, you are lethargic, exhausted even when you wake up in the morning, depressed and even become demented and a host of other mental disorders, including actual damage to your synaptic junctions such as Lou Gehrigs disease. There are more than one hundred neurotransmitters, all with their individual molecular sizes and unique shapes of the molecules that form the unique chemical codings of each one. The particular patterns of neurotransmitters are what carries the codes of pleasure or other sensory data that our brains interpret as such in all the smallest nuances of sensation there can be. Lack of enough of this dreamless state of sleep is common among soldiers or others in similar high stress environments such as what Dr. Steven Hawking did to himself during his youth in driving himself over and above others working in study to be able to get where he is now as the head of science at Cambridge in the UK. There are possibly other diseases similar to Lou Gehrigs stemming from the same sorts of sleep disorder causes along with other environmental factors, some of which are under our concious control and some of which are not. Research should focus on what we can control and that we cannot control to develop treatments to prevent Lou Gehrigs, possibly even developing stem cell treatments to cure the disease in people like Dr. Hawking and enable him to begin walking and speaking in his own voice again and to provide effective treatments for all those soldiers from the First Gulf War that would work.
I too have been working on such things, but only in the computer using solidworks CAD to create rough drawings for possible future development of such things as a practical small fusion power plant that is strikingly similar to the one developed by Philo T. Farnsworth, who developed the modern CRT television technology system of creating images on a phospher coated glass plate. Who also had a hand in the infamous Philedelphia experiment along with a number of scientists of the day including Einstein. The fusion plant I designed is to be used for an affordable home power generation unit so than the average home owner could buy one for their home and be truly energy independant from the commercial power grid and its vulnerabilities to storms, solar flare material causing very massive voltage and current spikes in high voltage power lines. It could also be developed further into a mass production transmutation machine for converting lighter elements into heavier ones. Possibly even to creating the super heavy very stable elements 113, 114, and 115 which have very unique quantum gravitational properties that we would find very useful I believe because of their gravitational resonance characteristics with the Planck length of scale and one dimensional strings of vacuum energy or neutrino properties. It is possible I think to cause the inducement of an increased quantum gravitational localized field strength just above a new innovative space craft for flight lift technology though needing another method to get off the ground because of the inverse square law to get further away from the mass of the Earth or other mass in space. This would work because of the unique nature of the fabric of space and the force of quantum mechanical gravity at the Planck scale of length. It is this literally unexplored reality that allows neutrinos to oscilate around the three or more "flavors" of neutrinos because they are so close in mass to the quantum vacuum average mass/energy fluctuations we call background radiation, the cause of the uncertainty principle as we understand it today. Being able to induce quantum gravity would allow us to build real "Star Gates" with real dialing in destination by creating artificial wormholes through which to pass through or build space craft to carry its own wormhole inducement machinery for creating a "traveling finite length" short wormhole in the path or vector you wanted the craft to go. The so-called "Warp Drive" of Star Trek that twists one dimensional strings to express the hidden collapsed dimensions and the forces and interactions with each other and the three forces we are now most familiar with, the electric, magnetic and gravitic lines of force that we use every day in communications all the time now that the technology is commonplace in our cell phones, television, computers etc. I predicted the discovery of massive black holes in the centers of galaxies including our own years ago based upon the observed gamma ray bursts happening in the trillions all over the sky. Black holes would all be pulled towards each other towards the centers of localized mass of all star clusters and merge there into really massive black holes. It is also possible for other forms of technology for "jet packs" to be built using smaller thruster units than those ducted fans. I have a design for a personal vehicle that uses ducted fans like those but larger in diameter for a vehicle that could carry a small number of passengers and cargo, just lke the personal car on the ground, and be all electric and therefore be non polluting and not adding to global warming like that "jet pack" in the current issue of Pop Sci.
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/general_sciences/The_Army_s_Telepathic_Ray_Gun_No_Really'; The U.S. Defense department has tested some spooky weapons, but those involving mind control and telepathic attack may be near the top of the list. A newly declassified 1998 document released under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act (download the pdf here), describes potential weapons for crowd control, such as a microwave gun that could beam words directly into peoples ears, and an electromagnetic pulse that causes epilepsy-like seizures.
Such weapons are entirely and frighteningly possible. The human nerve cells all contain within each one a matrix of microtubules in them from the neurotransmitter receptor sites. There are more than one hundred different neurotransmitters that determine the coding of the transmitted nerve impulse traveling from one nerve cell to the next in sequence. These codings are what tells the brain how to interpret the signal as pleasure or pain, pressure or something else and the microtubules carry the nuances of the codings. They are made of a single molecule that is chained together and laid down spirally to form the tiny tubules just like bucky tubes. This molecule has one single electron that moves from one nucleus to another and back again, just like a real molecular transistor switch. Any moving electron is susceptable to any radiated electromagnetic energy and in fact it is moving electrons that produce radiated electromagnetic energy. It is because of these structures that the technology displayed in the fictional movie "Brainstorm" staring the deceased actress Natilie Wood is entirely possible and may even have been the cause of the movie script, many such movies are based in the reality of ultra secret black budget operations of our own government and its scientists. You think it was a human civilization abberation what happened in World War II is and was commonplace, the experimenting on living human beings was going on in the United States and still is today but in more esoteric sciences like scalar so called "Tesla" waves. It is very possible to build something like the TV phasor of Star Trek to stun people by interfering directly with those microtubules in all our nerve cells, even being able to kill any living thing with a nervous system like ours. That is why I am concerned, just as the misuse of the nuclear rocket motor killed some people in Texas, this and other top secret projects have been and will continue to kill or destroy the lives of "test subjects" nothing has changed since WWII because people are still volenteering to be subjects of such dangerous experments, mainly federal prison inmates who are given no choice at all really. The real Germans of WWII did not invent what they did, they were the ones caught in the act of doing what they did. The truth is that our governments also perform such expirementation on people though with written signed and possibly coerced consent for the government peoples legal protection and for no other reason. The Germans NAZI party and people were merely doing what other governments, including our own, were and are still doing and this work will never be uncovered to see the light of day for obvious reasons of public outcry and outrage if the full facts were ever revealed to the worlds public in the news media.
A new simulation has mapped out the way dark matter—the invisible heft of the universe—could be distributed in a galaxy like our own Milky Way; showing that dark matter could be much more present in our neighborhood than previously thought, and suggesting that we may soon be able to detect it (and understand it) close to home.
I have always enjoyed Pop Sci most of my life. I made a paper mache model of the NERVA-K or KIWI nuclear rocket motor many years ago in grade school for a science project based upon the article that appeared in the print version of your magazine. I extrapolated the existance of the modern developed nuclear engine from the French LTGR or low temp gas recirculation reactor that uses plutonium fuel particles or crumbs in a ceramic matrix in these ceramic pellets made with just the right ratios of fissionable material fuel to inert ceramic matrix substrate to create a fission temperature infrared radiation of just 475 degrees farenheit. The French reactor design uses enriched uranium and is intended for safe reactors that would never melt down where as the rocket motor uses the more deadly plutonium for maximum heat generation for heating the coolant flluid, in this case either the atmospheric gases or helium which exhaust the motor as extremely highly radioactive and very deadly material being vented directly to the atmosphere. There was the case of June and Betty Cable in Texas, where testing of the engine and launch platform went on secretly for years and they happened to be driving along one night as the vehicle came down to hover over the road in front of their car, making them and the road extremely radioactive, giving the women radiation poisoning. Of course the federal government and the military have denied any wrong doing or compensated the women and they may even have died by now. I suggested a redesign and install a closed loop cooling system for extacting the heat for creating the high pressure exhaust for lift thrust, I don't know if they did it. Dark matter is nothing more than the mass signature or quantum gravitational signature of the vacuum energy of the fabric of space that we could possibly tap into for releasing energy for useful purposes in nearly infinite amounts relatively speaking, the theoretical "Zero point module" energy on Stargate Atlantis TV show.
