    Inside the Tsunami Factory

    digg_url = 'http://digg.com/environment/What_causes_monster_waves'; Over the past 1,300 years, the Nankai Trough, the 500-mile-long boundary between two tectonic plates off the southwestern coast of Japan, has been one of the worlds most active tsunami hotspots. Now an international team of scientists has embarked on a multiyear project to drill four miles down into the heart of this subterranean wave machine. The Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment, called Nantroseize, will be the first attempt to penetrate a tsunami-generating hotspot and could help scientists understand the source of the huge swells. We can monitor the ocean all we want, but well never understand why some earthquakes produce tsunamis and why others do not until we understand how faults work, says geophysicist Nathan Bangs of the University of Texas.

    If a single individual can SPAM a million computers, then WHY can't the government make a million simultaneous cell phone calls, to every citizen who is in the potential path of a hurricane, tornado, tsunami, OTHER natural disaster, or terrorist attack? Imagine getting a call in the middle of the night, informing you that you are in the direct path of a tornado - just in time - to take life saving measures. Or you are standing on the beach, on what appears to be a calm and peaceful day - when every cell phone on the beach rings - informing each person that a tsunami is on the way. How many lives could be saved? Even if someone were awakened in the middle of the night, there would be no false alarms. At least it would be for a good reason. The danger would be immediate - and in that geographic area - NOT something that is one or two counties over. UNLIKE radio or television announcements, which target a large geographic area - cell phone calls could be specific. The cell phone companies ALREADY know the general location of each cell phone that is near any given cell phone tower; and the number that would be called. That information is already being stored in their computers. Very little in the way of anything new, would have to be implemented. The only thing that seems lacking, is the initiative to do it.
