300 MPG Car Opens For Business

By Posted on 1.22.2008 7 Comments

A company called Aperta is taking reservations for the production version of a three-wheeled, 300 MPG concept car that looks like it was lifted from a '60s science fiction flick. Eventually, the company says an all-electric model that will cruise for 120 miles before needing a re-charge will be available for $26,900. A hybrid version will sell for $29,900. In a year, you'll also be able to reserve a model that flies directly to the Jovian moon Europa, where it will convert into a submarine and take you deep below the surface to search for alien life forms. OK, so maybe that's not quite true. And we're reluctant to believe those 300 MPG claims, too. That said, the company's Web site sure is sweet.—Gregory Mone

    X, X, The Magical Fruit

By Posted on 5.1.2008 4 Comments

An apple a day might keep away more than the doctor. HortResearch, a New Zealand company with 400 scientists studying all things fruit, has early data that suggests a specific (mystery) fruit can delay fatigue by 20 percent and increase muscle power by 70 percent. But don't raid the produce aisle quite yet. Hort won't say which fruit has shown the benefits and also notes their version is a variety bred internally for the right compound interactions. In other words, for those of use not lucky enough to be Hort test subjects, it doesn't exist.

40th-Anniversary Hot Wheels Rope in Big Designers From Detroit and Beyond

By Posted on 2.7.2008 1 Comments

Ford_036The ubiquitous Hot Wheels brand of toy cars is releasing a 40th-anniversary collection designed by real automotive car manufacturers. Designers from Chevrolet, Dodge, Honda, Lotus, Mitsubishi and Ford were invited to submit drawings for the limited edition set. The winning 1/64 scale models were selected by a panel of executives and writers from automotive publications like Car and Driver. Though most of the designs appear to be free of any rigorous DOT road-worthiness constraints, each entry had to pass the "one lap" test on Hot Wheels' own oval test track.

    The Lunar Habitat Hauler

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/space/NASA_S_A_T_H_L_E_T_E'; The Winnebago isnt exactly a marvel of technology. But theres a good chance that NASAs next generation of lunar travelers will live and work out of a two-piece system—a mobile robot and habitat combination that will allow astronauts to bring base camp with them—that has plenty in common with the humble RV.

Are Supercar Designers Out of Ideas?

By Posted on 5.1.2008 3 Comments

Let's face it. It's hard to design a new exotic supercar. The most timeless shapes were spoken for years ago, and every exotic since then has been just a derivative mishmash of science fiction and aerodynamics optimization (especially the homemade ones). That's not to say a car like the Lamborghini Gallardo isn't good looking in its own way, or that the Aston Martin DB9 isn't a luscious piece of eye candy. It's just that those traditional parameters of automotive beauty—see any Ferrari built before 1972—no longer exist.
