As California returns to requiring automakers to sell zero-emissions vehicles, BMW is apparently aiming to get in first on the gold rush. Automotive News reports BMW will export an electric version of its Mini to California. The state's zero-emissions vehicle program will require nearly 60,000 plug-in cars to be sold in the state between 2012 and 2014.
Most electricity in California is hydro-generated. These cars will be near zero-emissions.
The first annual BioMass conference, attended by biofuels researchers, manufacturers, equipment suppliers, and farmers, is underway here at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Prime on the agenda in the opening session this morning was a question lately blaring from headlines, for instance in a story in today's New York Times: can we grow crops for converting into fuel without catastrophically upsetting the world's food supply?
Any new technology is going to be very inefficient and expensive in its beginning stages. What is disturbing is how many people are willing to give up on biofuels just as serious research is getting started. As world population grows and prosperity spreads, the demand for energy is going to be enormous, outstripping the demand for food. We can't afford to pick and choose. The world needs all its technologies, bioenergy, solar, nuclear, wind and conservation. In the meantime, we cannot stop drilling for oil or mining coal either.
