Second Life Prepping for a Second Boom

By Posted on 4.23.2008 7 Comments

The knock on popular virtual world Second Life has been that it's a little slow, and not entirely easy to use. Sure, it has roughly 13 million registered citizens, but only a few hundred thousand are actual devotees who spend a fair amount of time in the alternate universe.

Reports of Impending Doom Greatly Exaggerated

By Posted on 4.21.2008 3 Comments

A German newspaper reported last week that 13-year-old Nico Marquardt corrected a few glitches in NASA's estimates regarding the chances of a certain asteroid colliding with Earth. NASA concluded that the Apophis space rock has only a 1 in 45,000 chance of knocking into us, but this school-kid announced that the space agency had missed a few zeros, suggesting that the probability is closer to 1 in 450. And while quite a few news reports backed him up, even claiming that NASA agreed Marquardt was correct, the space agency is sticking to its estimates.

Maybe NASA is right, maybe the kid is right. But if i had to choose who will defend earth from that asteroid i would definetly choose NASA. "In other words, stick to video games, kid, and leave the Earth-protection to the pros."

Why do Aliens Hate Radivoje Lajic?

By Posted on 4.11.2008 8 Comments

Radivoje Lajic thinks aliens don't like him. The Bosnian man says his home has been hit by meteorites no less than five times. He took the rocks to experts at Belgrade University, who confirmed that they are the real thing. But they haven't been able to verify that Lajic did anything to anger the extraterrestrials, or that he's the target of some extra-planetary prank. Still, Lajic seems sure this isn't just a coincidence.

Next time a spaceship will park not properly in his backyard. That sounds like a cheap story sold to a yellow newspaper.

A Better Way to Play Battlestar Galactica

digg_url = 'http://www.popsci.com/you-built-what/article/2008-03/better-way-play-battlestar-galactica'; I admit it: Im completely addicted to Battlestar Galactica. And after watching countless episodes, I was convinced I could bank and spin a Viper, the shows signature spaceship, like a pro. So to prove it, some friends and I built a full-cockpit flight simulator to enable total immersion in the BSG universe.
