The Future of Energy: A Realist's Roadmap to 2050

By Posted on 6.22.2009 32 Comments

This December, when representatives from 170 countries meet at the United Nations climate talks in Copenhagen to replace the expiring Kyoto climate treaty, the smart money predicts unprecedented collaboration. American political change coupled with spiking carbon dioxide levels could inspire a communal project on a scale not seen since World War II. A consensus, backed by science, is emerging among the international community that by 2050 we need to reduce emissions of C02, methane and other greenhouse gases to approximately 80 percent lower than they were in 1990. It will mean a wholesale reinvention of the global energy economy; anything less could result in catastrophe. Here's how we'll get there.

We have a credo around here: The future will be better. It may sound optimistic in light of our wheezing environment and limping economy, but then you haven’t met the Brilliant 10, PopSci’s annual selection of the nation’s most promising young researchers.

US Special Forces Field-Testing Plasma Knife

By Posted on 10.15.2009 20 Comments

Emergency medical care for soldiers wounded on the battlefield has come a long way since Hawkeye and Hot Lips. But for Special Forces troopers operating deep behind enemy lines, that care often remains out of reach. Blood loss in particular makes seconds count, and imperils commandos operating far away from friendly bases. To help with the problem of blood loss from traumatic wounds, the military has started field-testing a device more Mandalorian than M.A.S.H.: a plasma knife.

I know how! :) Hey peoples, if that blade is from "ionized gas", that is not a "Light-saber"!!! It's not have posibility to stop another one... ...Think litle, please! To heal without blood yes, to kill without blood yes, but for long range weapon will be lost of a expensive equipment... ...But why not peoples make everything to kill another human!!!

A Submersible Aircraft, Powered By Ideas

By John Brandon Posted on 10.9.2008 10 Comments

It sounds like a Hollywood concept, but DARPA wants to make the submersible aircraft a reality -- and they need your help. This week, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency put out a request for designs: they want a vehicle with a 2,000-pound capacity that can cover an area of about 1,000 nautical miles, fly that distance in just eight hours, and -- by the way -- fly both above and below water.

I know how!!! Yes, yes, yes... "DARPA wants", but will they pay the prize??? I designed an engine without fuel recharge but for experimental work are need over US 6 million... ...Will they pay the prize???

Point. Click. Kill: Inside The Air Force's Frantic Unmanned Reinvention

By Eric Hagerman Posted on 8.18.2009 36 Comments

Without traffic, it takes Captain Adam Brockshus about 45 minutes to drive from his four-bedroom suburban home outside Las Vegas to Creech Air Force Base in Indian Springs, Nevada. His commute follows Highway 95 northwest through a stretch of the Mojave freckled with Joshua trees and flanked by arid mountain ranges. He trains pilots for combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, yet this desolate drive may be the most harrowing part of his job.

NASA's Plan For Detecting Potentially Threatening Asteroids Is in Financial Jeopardy

By Jeremy Hsu Posted on 8.12.2009 6 Comments

Congress charged NASA with finding 90 percent of nearby space rocks greater than 140 meters (460 ft) by 2020. Now the National Research Council warns that the space agency will fall short of that goal without more funding.

    DARPA Turns 50

By Posted on 4.23.2008 2 Comments

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, celebrated its golden anniversary last night in typically low-key style with a banquet here at the Washington Hilton. The 1,600 tuxedoed attendees included nine former DARPA directors, program managers past and present, and scientists and engineers from DARPA's contractors in the private sector and academia.

How good will be if somewhere have agency who is not connected with military, to make a financing for projects like these who finance DARPA... For example "Human A.R.P.A." And maybe I wrong but give very litle money for new research only 90-100.000 USD for one project! For exapple financing of research "perpetum-mobile" will cost 5 to 10 milion...

    Building the Real Iron Man

Afghanistan. A hidden bunker. Four men with rifles guard a thick, rusted steel door. Bam! A huge fist pounds against it—from inside. Bam! More blows dent the steel. The hinges strain. The guards cower, inching backward. Whatever's trying to break out is big. And angry.

Get Out Your Lightsaber: Star Wars on the Wii

By Posted on 1.22.2008 5 Comments

Yes, yes, and yes. Owners of Nintendo's revolutionary new Wii system will soon be welcoming a new game to the stable, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Sure, you'll be able to play it on the PS3 and the Xbox 360, too, but why would anyone bother? This is what the Wii is made for. Next year, players will be able to wield their controllers like a Skywalker. And you'll do so as a bad guy. Apparently, you'll serve as Darth Vader's apprentice, charged with ridding the universe of Jedi. That might not sound too appealing for those of you who don't like the idea of working for a murderous villain, but watch the trailer here, then try to tell me you're not ready to work for the Empire.—Gregory Mone
