    Solar Systems Like Ours

By Posted on 4.14.2008 11 Comments

Less than fifteen years ago, the concept of an extrasolar planet orbiting a star much like our own was only a theory. Since that time, we've discovered nearly 300 extrasolar planets in all, but have consistently failed to find systems which orbit around stars resembling the sun. Today, the BBC is reporting on a find by astronomers from St. Andrews University of two gas giants on par with Saturn and Jupiter in orbit around a star half the size of our sun. While the finding is not a direct link to a system similar to ours, it does present an increased likelihood that our system is not unique.

Facebook Reportedly Plans to Settle With Rival

By Posted on 4.8.2008 1 Comments

The New York Times reported yesterday that Facebook, the hugely successful social-networking site, is going to settle its disagreement with the founders of semi-rival ConnectU. The ConnectU founders all attended Harvard with Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, and say that after they hired him to work on their idea for a kind of dating site called Harvard Connection, he stalled instead, and developed his own project while halting progress on theirs. According to ConnectU, Zuckerberg basically grabbed their idea and turned it into Facebook. Another ex-Harvard entrepreneur has made similar claims, but doesn't plan to sue.

lol. Sounds to me like they didnt want to sue when it first got started. But now that there project is in the toilet, and his is worth 15bill they want to sue. Psh why do courts even let scam artists file claims? -Word.of.Warcraft

    Building the Real Iron Man

By Posted on 5.7.2008 47 Comments

Afghanistan. A hidden bunker. Four men with rifles guard a thick, rusted steel door. Bam! A huge fist pounds against it—from inside. Bam! More blows dent the steel. The hinges strain. The guards cower, inching backward. Whatever's trying to break out is big. And angry.

Hmm thats pretty cool. I can see why the military is paying out-the wazoo for this thing. Personaly i think it should be used for construction, to save on energy and only have to endanger 3 men instead of 50. Also i dont like the idea of wasting it fighting battles, it seems like kind of a waste if u ask me. And the disabled thing is a really great idea if you can make it less noticeable, and or bulky. -Word.of.Warcraft

Why Trashing the Oceans is More Dangerous Than We Imagined

By Posted on 4.1.2008 13 Comments

Last fall we reported on the growing mess of garbage swirling in the North Pacific Gyre. Its a swath of ocean arguably the size of the continental U.S. where all the plastic refuse from Asia and the western coast of North America ends up when its washed out to sea. Turtles mistake bags for jellyfish and birds mistake floating chips for prey. Animals have been discovered starved to death because the entire contents of their stomachs were plastic fragments. Sail a boat out to the middle of the gyre and the problem is in plain sight. Unfortunately for us, the more severe problem is the one we cant see.

Agreed. People just dont understand every bit of pollution you causes comes back to "Someone". Its the fact that they dont think it will affect them in anyway that keeps them doing it. Its exactly the same with almost all enviormental pollution. We are also still just putting suage straight into rivers and streams. Meh. But as usual we wont get it until its 2 late. -Word.of.Warcraft

    When Science and Justice Clash

By Posted on 3.31.2008 6 Comments

Paul Offit has written an op-ed in todays New York Times which hastens to point out what other news stories have largely misrepresented in the Hannah Poling autism lawsuit: The outcome of the court ruling does not mean the government is admitting to a causal link between childhood vaccines and the onset of autis

I dont think the parents should of been awarded anything. Making a law suit on the people who most likely saved there child's life from some painful and possibly cronicly damaging disease is very ungreatful. Further more them encourageing other parents not to use vaccines on there new borns is absoulutley rediculous. Id rather have my child get a slight disorder (Which from what ive read is very unlikely) than die because i was an idiot and didnt give a few extra dollars towards a vaccine because i was to afraid of an unproved theory. -Word.of.Warcraft

    (Re)Introducing the Micropacer

By Posted on 4.1.2008 1 Comments

The only thing better than new technology is old technology. Add the term "vintage," price it at a premium and watch us geeks drool. Generally, sports technology isn't old enough to go retro; Adidas begs to differ with the return of its 1984 Micropacer shoe. Predating today's growing pedometer obsession by two decades, the Micropacer was the first shoe to implant a microchip in the big toe area, which registered steps each time the wearer pushed off.

Hmmm. Seems pretty uselful to me. Even if it is old it would be very handy not to have a seprate machine, and just have to look down at your shoe.-Word.of.Warcraft

Your Gaming Rig Needs the Alienware Curved Display

By Posted on 1.22.2008 3 Comments

Sure you've seen two big flat-panels linked together side by side on gaming rigs before. But this bad boy ties them into one sveltely-curved unit. The Alienware Curved is a single 2880x900 (2x WXGA+ resolution), powered by DLP projection (so it's not that svelte, from behind anyway). But it works with any game that already supports dual-head WXGA+ setups and should hit gaming dens near you in the second half of '08. —John Mahoney Want more?
