Cocktail Party Science: Science Confirms the Obvious

By Posted on 3.31.2008 1 Comments

Caffeine wakes you up, rock stars die young and long ambulance rides aren't ideal. Sound obvious? You bet. But there's more than meets the eye here. On this week's episode of Cocktail Party Science, the writers and editors of PopSci's "Science Confirms the Obvious," talk to host Chuck Cage about the studies that make you say "duh" and why they're worth a second look.

Another great podcast. Really enjoyed this one. Again, great job Chuck. This podcast brings to mind something I think about a lot, and that is how under-appreciated the scientific method is in our society today. We owe all the wonderous technology innovations ...in computers, networking, medical science, transportation and energy....to the scientists whose adherence to the scientific method fed the engineering that makes everything work. I know religion is important to many people and I don't want to minimize that, but doesn't it seem strange that religion gets so much of people's time and energy, while science and the scientific method aren't given an equal share of honor and attention in our society? Science is what provides us with miracles we can actually see!! Like a device that lets you story a week's worth of music? Technology that lets you send these words across the ether in seconds? ...(sorry for gettin' all deep...) Anyway, great podcast. Keep 'em coming.

A Better Way to Play Battlestar Galactica

By Posted on 3.31.2008 10 Comments

digg_url = 'http://www.popsci.com/you-built-what/article/2008-03/better-way-play-battlestar-galactica'; I admit it: Im completely addicted to Battlestar Galactica. And after watching countless episodes, I was convinced I could bank and spin a Viper, the shows signature spaceship, like a pro. So to prove it, some friends and I built a full-cockpit flight simulator to enable total immersion in the BSG universe.

Great podcast!! I remember watching Battlestar Galactica as a kid, and love the new reimagined one that's on TV now. Seems like it took a lot of work to build that Viper simulator, but I'll bet it was a labor of love. Keep up the great work, Chuck!

Cocktail Party Science: Solving the Gas Problem

Fuel your stomach, then fuel your mind with this week's edition of Cocktail Party Science. Listen in as host Chuck Cage talks to writer Amanda Schaffer and PopSci editor Seth Fletcher about how E. coli could become the most alternative fuel of all. Plus: Should pollution be a sin? How 'bout genetic engineering?

I just started listening to this podcast, and I'm loving it! Very interesting stuff, and well presented. The host Mr. Cage is doing a great job keeping the conversation going and asking great questions (the kind of questions I would ask.). It's been years since I've subscribed to print edition of Pop sci, but I think this podcast is pushing me to want to subscribe (I like the mix of reading a mag, and listening to the podcast about it.) When it comes to alternative fuels, I really think the sucessful ones will be one that fits neatly into the American infrastructure. If it can be easily distributed at gas stations, then the barriers of moving towards it become trivial. Keep up the great work, Chuck!
