Video: Boston Dynamics' Petman Is the Creepy Bipedal Evolution of Big Dog

By Adrian Covert Posted on 10.26.2009 15 Comments

The latest innovation to come out of the Boston Dynamics labs is the Petman--a two-legged, upright robot that simulates the walking motion of human beings. And like its quadruped cousin the BigDog, this thing is equally creepy/hilarious (check out the shoes).

It just reminds me of the 80's Herbie Hancock video for Rockit . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nK0Pi4wC8Hk

How Do I Capture Internet Video?

By Posted on 10.8.2008 4 Comments

It’s easy. If there’s a knee-slapping viral video or an NFL highlight reel you’ve got to own, you can get it with just a little effort. To reduce the risk of legal trouble, don’t distribute it, though; keep it only for your personal use.

I just use Firefox and the CacheViewer plugin. Once the vid has downloaded fully, search the Cache for the video/flv mime types and copy to disk. Then use a converter like the one njdevil suggests. you could download CamStudio from Camstudio.org for free for capturing live video.

    Hungry for Power

By Posted on 2.19.2008 7 Comments

I have a confession to make: I am an addict. Im strung out, my friends, literally—surrounded by the paraphernalia of my drug of choice, electricity. My apartment is a sickening jumble of daisy-chained power strips and extension cords, all supporting my particular addiction to wall warts—those power-squandering, space-wasting, chunky black power adapters used to juice my gadgets. Im not about to give up all my electronic gear—no sir, thats not an option—so Id like to offer a compromise. A methadone treatment, if you will allow me to stretch this already thin metaphor.

You can't mess with AC power for a regular power outlet, Eddison and Tesla sorted that some time ago and Eddison was wrong. But if you were to run DC to a wall outlet, then perhaps power over ethernet is a good way to go. It's a standard that still needs some sorting, but if you were to put the might of consumer electronics behind it then I think it could work.
