    Wii've Lost Control

By Abby Seiff Posted on 8.20.2008 8 Comments

Ah the sweet smell of litigation in the afternoon. Nintendo, hardly a shrinking violet when it comes to courting lawsuits, is being sued Hillcrest Labs over the provenance of the Wii controller.

    Good News About the Environment

By Sam Barrett Posted on 8.22.2008 4 Comments

Although we still have much progress to make on reducing emissions, new research suggests the situation could be worse. According to a study by the Desert Research Institute, pollutant levels at the beginning of the 20th century were two to five times higher than current levels of pollution. Researchers attribute the decrease in pollution levels to the advent of more efficient coal-burning technologies, as well as legislation aimed at reducing emissions.

    Airborne Adventures

By Posted on 6.23.2008 2 Comments

I recently got my first look at two very different games from Capcom that share one interesting trait –your on-screen character will fly through the air with the greatest of ease (although not getting shot and landing without killing yourself prove pretty challenging). DarkVoid was first to catch my eye.

Great games they are but don't forget the awesome body armor VS's where a human can jump in and move around in a mech kind of vessel! also the garbling hook that you will see in bionic commando or an other game Metroid Prime.

    Riding Clean

Among his other unusual hobbies (he also builds sculptures featuring fire-spewing robots), 32-year-old Justin Gray makes custom electric motorcycles. To create his latest drag racer, the R144, Gray tore the motor and gasoline systems out of a 1999 Yamaha R1, a bike with a frame large enough to hold the extra parts he needed for the conversion. Since the gas engine had been an important structural element in the original bike, he built his own aluminum motor bracket to hold the modified bike together.

Man i have been waiting for this news a LOOOOOOOONG time now. I almost started to think it was not possible to make a electric motorbike. on what i see on this bike it still looks a bit chunky but i hope that will change in the future! if this technology is getting a bit more advanced i would like to convert my Yamaha XJ900S Diversion in to a Yamaha Electric Diversion!

    Glow Rug

By Posted on 3.28.2008 6 Comments

As someone who has broken the same pinky toe three times and fractured my fifth metatarsal once, I can immediately see the appeal of a rug that lights up when you step on it. (I will conveniently neglect to mention that all my breaks happened during the middle of the day.) Invented by two engineering students at London South Bank University, the rug uses electroluminescence to glow under the weight of a footfall.

    One Camera, 12,616 Lenses

By Posted on 3.21.2008 7 Comments

Last year, we reported on the Adobe light-field camera, a prototype device with 19 lenses which captures 19 versions of the same image at different focal lengths. The associated software then lets the user choose which parts of the resulting photograph should be in focus, which can produce a virtually 3D image. We also briefly mentioned a project at Stanford University which is experimenting with their own multi-lensed device.

DARPA's Amazing Robot Pack Mule Keeps its Balance On Ice

By Posted on 3.17.2008 17 Comments

Two years ago we showed you Boston Dynamics' incredible BigDog—one of the world's most ambitious legged robots—being developed for DARPA and the U.S. Army. With its advanced system of hyper-responsive hydraulic joints and a suite of sensors, accelerometers and gyroscopes, the BigDog's most stunning achievement is it's ability to walk, climb and maintain its balance on diverse terrain, even after slipping on ice or receiving a kick to one side. All while carrying several hundreds of pounds of supplies on its "back."

    A Cure for Fat Fingers

By Posted on 3.10.2008 4 Comments

Touch-screen interfaces have an inherent problem—you can't see through your fingertips to see the spot you're trying to touch. After abandoning its controversial efforts to breed humans with transparent fingers, Microsoft came up with another novel solution, a system that lets you touch the back of a device and see an overlay of virtual fingertips on the front display.

Pioneer Bails Out of the Plasma Panel Business

By Posted on 3.7.2008 2 Comments

Sure, they are pricey energy hogs, but dang, those Pioneer Kuro plasma TVs are stunning. Crisp pictures, gorgeous colors and sky-high contrast ratios that make the movie characters practically jump off the screen. So it was with great alarm and sadness that we got the news that Pioneer still stop making those incredible panels. By my reckoning, it will be at least another three years of eating nothing but beans and rice until I can afford to buy one of the sets, and I suppose they may all be sold out by then.

i do understand the move in terms of costs reduction. but on the other hand Panasonic is getting a better and bigger position to the industry of plasma screens.

The Breakdown: Tic The Spinning Hamster

By Posted on 3.8.2008 7 Comments

Tic, the unfortunate hamster in this video, loses his footing while getting some exercise and gets pulled into the spin cycle, completing nearly 12 revolutions in about four seconds before ignominiously dropping out of the wheel. However, while Tic may be bewildered by what happened during his morning training session, we need not be. Why does he get pulled into the spin? How does he remain in orbit for 12 rotations before falling off of the wheel? How does he finally escape? These are the questions we will address for Tics sake.
