For the first time, scientists have observed a single molecule emitting light when sandwiched between broken segments of a carbon nanotube. The new device emitted just one photon for every 1 billion electrons, according to the study. The research could lead to development of optical electronics based on individual molecules. Or Tron costumes for the masses.
Lunar eclipses, like pretty much all readily visible astronomical events, are indisputably awesome. Microsoft's Applied Sciences Group recently displayed some very advanced 3-D technology, that solves a major problem with 3-D: the glasses. 3-D without glasses has been around for awhile, but it has always had some limitations. One of the largest and most troubling limitations is that it only works for one viewer, and that viewer must keep their eyes within a specific area.

In April, President Obama urged NASA to come up with, among other things, a less expensive method than conventional rocketry for launching spacecraft. By September, the agency's engineers floated a plan that would save millions of dollars in propellant, improve astronaut safety, and allow for more frequent flights. All it will take is two miles of train track, an airplane that can fly at 10 times the speed of sound, and a jolt of electricity big enough to light a small town.
It's been a big week for those long-serving spacecraft we don't always hear so much about. Earlier this week news broke that Voyager 1 had crossed a benchmark boundary on the far fringes of the solar system, and now Odyssey, launched back in 2001, has surpassed the Mars Global Surveyor as the longest-running mission to Mars.
