NASA launches the Space X Rocket, at a NASA Facility, using NASA Engineers, with NASA computers, Tracking and Controlling with NASA Staff and the Engineers who Built the Falcon and Capsule are either X NASA or Boeing Engineers that were Laid Off when Barak MaoBama Killed the NASA Space Program!! SpaceX leases this launch pad (and another in California) from the Air Force. This is SpaceX's vehicle. NASA has supervised, very heavily, the entire development and testing of these COTS contract vehicles. And SpaceX was awarded these contracts before Obama was even running for president. SpaceX isn't the only company ready to fly to the space station, and rest assured NASA will be tracking those vehicles alongside it's owners as well. You make it sound like SpaceX is a made up company flying NASA vehicles for political purposes. This simply isn't true. And yes, the Dragon capsule will carry humans into space, but(at least as far as NASA is concerned) I don't think its supposed to happen for at least another 3 years.

The GOP killed the replacement for the shuttle just as it was with any science and art program that they see no dollar value in, that's what the hubbub was in the last decade, remember? It was pretty big news for a long time about how we were leaving manned space flight after the last 2 shuttles finished the work on the space station and we had until 2010 to get it done, or do faux goggles apply to everything, whether Obama had anything to do with it or not?

Space Exploration Technologies and other commercial entities should consider a business model that caters to a multitude of clientele besides just NASA and space tourism. Research firms and universities could benefit from this by furthering many cosmic theoretical concepts through experimentation. Industry could benefit from this by expanding the production of large scale vessels and facilities that could be positioned in space. With our way of life, the only thing that will help further human presence beyond the Earth will be space activity on an industrial level.

What must occur for this to happen is for people to see more than just the possibility for profit through tourism. Scientific experimentation and theory leading to law drives engineering innovation. Innovation through engineering turns science fiction possibilities into reality. New possibilities equate to further industrializing our expanding civilization (i.e. land, capital, natural resources).

This is just the first step in an industrial aerospace revolution. The question is how long it will take to get started.

Maybe some don't think that for a company to be vetted to operate in the environment of our 15 billion dollar investment (thanks, PopSci, for getting the word out quick when they considered de-orbiting); there should of course be stringent proving requirements...and of course, seeing as how it hasn't actually been worked out much yet, how the public-private permitting will play out on the international stage, what enforcement actually is, who does it...

Maybe just any new startup? No one in particular at the helm of the first commercial-national program effort to achieve finally, what Eisenhower and Kennedy built the program for?

Musk took advantage of his opportunity. Gotta start somewhere, might as well be him.

If NASA is really that concerned about the space property they left behind they should stopping spending billions on projects that they end up scrapping, use a bit more common sense, and send a lunar party to fence off areas of historical importance with some signs "please do not touch" and while there how about a few recycle bins and a trash bin for just in case??
