Tupac Resurrected

In the future, we will all live forever--at least if our body of work is popular enough to warrant resurrection. Just ask Tupac Shakur--now deceased for nearly 15 years--who showed up in holographic form to perform alongside Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre at Coachella over the weekend.

The ridiculously realistic hologram arrived on stage to wow fans with renditions of 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted and Hail Mary, but not before greeting Coachella-goers with a “What the ---- is up Coachella?”--a festival that did not even exist at the time of his death. Which is all a bit unnerving but undeniably awesome.

Check out Holo-Tupac’s entire performance below, but be forewarned: this is characteristically very NSFW. Or for younger audiences. This video is simply very not safe.

Wish the write up was a bit more about how they did it...The detail is amazing, i would almost say it was a real person up there but the color contrast between snoop and tupac was what changed my mind.....hopefully they come up with better uses for this kind of technology.. Couple it with a good AI and you could have the holographic librarian from the Time Machine comes to mind lol

um... what type of hologram was it? Was it simply projected onto steam or the like? Or was it a hologram made with projected light without anything else? IF THAT was the case, this is cool. If not and it just uses steam, nice gimick but isnt really all that practical in terms of mobility

Unreal!
Henceforth Dr. Dre shall be called "The Doctor"
I'm thinking this could be adapted to build a light sabre.

Maybe Tupac, Aaliyah & Biggie can have a concert.

In the future all actors / Entertainers will be holograms.

Pretty Cool stuff.

RIP Tupac, best hip hop artist to ever do it.

Too bad it had to be first done with a ghetto swearing dude. Not the king of person I'd like to see resurrected.

@ USNDonahue: I'm working on it, check back a bit later and hopefully we'll have some more detail on exactly how this was executed.

According to msnbc.com “A video was first was composed by New York (special effects) company MPC using a mixture of live footage, wire-framing, and CGI," Aaron Souppouris wrote. "This was then fed into (3-D hologram company) Musion's holographic technology, which projects the image onto a special foil. The foil is based on principles set out in the old magician's illusion Pepper's Ghost, which trick audiences into thinking they're viewing a person or object rather than a simple reflection.”

i flipped when i saw this im buying tickets if HOLOPAC goes on tour. alain is a hater

yo yo YO Yo Yo Yo, be hip bob be hip bop science NOT!

When I pay a large amount of money to see a concert or play, I want to see the concert or play and not a fax.

So, what is the real point of this technology or article? Can I produce a 3D concert in my home yet or just on the stage.

Well, when I pay high dollar for the stage, I want the real deal!

This technology is very impressive but it is not new. Japan's most famous singer is a hologram and uses the same tech. But as side from this this reminds me of the librarian from "The Time Machine" starring guy pearce.

Apparently, they used a Pepper Ghost technology. A 2D image made to look 3D. The company AV Concepts was responsible for the images in this show. Here's their website and video talking about the technology.

@ Apoca-Risk

Get back under your bridge.

Yes, I definitely want to hear more detail on how this projection worked. Is it really a hologram, where you can see different perspectives on it by viewing it from different angles, side-to-side or up-and-down? Or is it just a flat projection of a movie made from a computer-generated image, where if you viewed it from a side angle it would look like a flat projection viewed from a side angle.

The word hologram is used in all sorts of ways that are technically incorrect. To be a real hologram, it needs to look like a real 3D object, without wearing special glasses, even if you tilt your head sideways, and its perspective should change if you move closer or farther away from it, as if it were a real object. Did this projection do those things? We need more information!

The other problem is that these images, hologram or not, need to be projected onto something, some kind of surface needs to reflect the light back to the viewers, or else the light from the projector will just keep going out into space and not be seen by anybody. A real hologram looks like it is in front of or behind its projection surface, but a surface is still needed.

Theoretically, two carefully controlled laser beams could intersect in space with no projection surface, and the interference patterns could be used to create an image, and I believe researchers are working on this, but I haven't seen any indication that such technology is ready to generate a full-motion, full-color image of a hip hop artist.

@ Apoca-Risk - How about being thankful that the writer introduced us to this amazing event. If not for this article, I would've continued living my life not knowing about it. The purpose of this site is not always to explain every detail, but to share interesting information. We are all better off for it.

On a separate note, they should put together a Carl Sagan hologram and have him give lectures alongside some of today's inspirational scientists.

this is how the illuminati will fake a so called return of jesus and also stage an alien attack. they are just preparing us. its funny how this appears in 2012. soon the aunnuaki will return to destroy the illuminati once and for all!!!!!!!!

@JediMindset you know how it goes, anything announced to the public has been in use for at least 10 years. They probably used this technology or even more advanced incarnations of it to fake certain events of 9/11. 10 years later and STILL no video of the plane hitting the pentagon?? HMMMMMMM

technically its not a hologram. It's an image projected onto a thin film that you can't see in the dark from below the stage.

It is impressive how they reconstructed the image but more impressive how dr dre is able to to capitalize on this century old technology. It's just a marketing gimmick.

@Aldrons Last Hope,

yeah they only give us/let us see there "toys". they have stuff unimaginable behind the curtain. stuff that will blow our minds. alien technology is the reason for many of our electronics. they have tried to reverse engineer a lot of there technology but have failed for the most part. and yeah no video of plan hitting the pentagon.

Looks a bit like Asgard tech, if you ask me...
Seems the Stargate program did bring us new technologies...
Now where's that Prometheus?

@Aldron's Last Hope

Just recently I watched a history channel show that clearly showed the plane flying over the lawn and impacting the building from the view of a parking lot security camersa.
