Is China's J-20 Stealth Plane Airborne? via Flightglobal

When pictures circulated yesterday showing China’s “secret” stealth jet taking flight, there was speculation the photos could be fake. Not anymore. Aside from Chinese President Hu Jintao’s confirmation to U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates that the J-20 has indeed conducted its first test flight, video of the maiden voyage has surfaced as well.

We’ve posted a longer cut of the video here, complete with all the taxiing, standing around, and escort jet-launching that accompanies a test flight. Look for the J-20’s takeoff sequence to begin at the three minute mark.

I don't really see this a problem for the most part. A couple of years back I believe it was the Isreal figured out that you can spot stealth aircraft using a country's cellular phone system. The stealth aircraft would cause a dark spot on the cellular network based on location and distance to nearest tower. I do like how even the rear stabilizers are slanted. lol

The aircraft's skin has the sheen of metal, not composite materials. The ventral strakes obviously were added to address high speed yaw and/or pitch issues. That puppy is a big plane with unshielded engine exhausts, and it looks like a blend of F-22 stealth contours and Eurofighter features. Dogfight capabilities? Probably very good to excellent. Max speed? My guess is around mach 2 tops. Stealth capabilities? Very good, but nowhere as good as an F-22, particularly from the rear.

thats a HUGE jet. I want to see it doing some actual flight maneuverer. curious about how well it can handle in flight, or what its ceiling is.

They have copied the iPhone and much more. Most espionage cases involve classified data to China.

F16+F15+Raptor22+Eurofighter=J20. One of many byproducts when Espionage, Industrial excellence, and Determination are combined.

Stealth isn't just on or off, there are many shades and nothing is 100% stealth. This design appears stealthy-er than most, but it also gives the appearance of a much larger radar signature than the F-22 or F-35. It's the little things that make a big difference and this looks like stealth on the cheap. This design also looks to have a very significant heat signature, which makes it susceptible to heat seeking. That said, it could prove a very effective combat aircraft. Let China thump its chest. The US and its allies have nothing to fear from this. The real threat is economic.

@Whys333
I can totally agree. I think this jet is not on the extreme side of stealth. I think its a good step forward for the country.

There is alot more to this plane then just what it can do.... There is also what it means... China has the numbers game going for them and also has put a grip on the rare earth market.... They could mass produce this plane once it goes full scale.... Clinch on to your buttocks guys, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

China is still having problems with their engines. But they will get it down at some point. The bigger threat with aviation is the recent agreement between Russia and India to develop a stealth fighter-bomber. The fact is America is sliding due to our military being over deployed and our resources becoming limited. We may be number one in military but it might change as we lose our ability to manufacture due to destroying our manufacturing infrastructure and selling out to foreign interests. Corporate raiding leaves us vulnerable.

@pits.and.mcgoo

This is why investment in space exploration is important. It doesn't matter what country has a resource edge on this rock when we can lay claim to resources on another.

It can't be that stealthy with those big honkin engines can it? Wouldn't that give off a bigger heat signature? And wouldn't it's bigger size give it a bigger radar signature?

Feels like a poor mans F-22. And besides, how much of our work is done with drones now?

Doesn't look like it has thrust vectoring like the Russians and US have (not sure about Eurofighter.) So in my opinion not as manuverable, but with those huge engines it's bound to be speedy. But how efficient?

This isn't really our concern, it's the concern of our pacific allies.

Agreed with several above, someone sat down with some model kits and kitbashed this thing into existance.

(really? neutrinos is a captcha? lol)

@GoneToPlaid
How can a plane with such an elongated body have good dogfighting abilities? That's like saying the SR-71 Blackbird or the Passanger Jet Concorde would be able to dog fight, just because they have big engines. Engines don't mean squat in a dog fight unless you are doing high speed pass attacks, but then this plane can't outrun a mach 3 air to air missile, so that is useless.
The only thing this plane has going for it is the large engines, there's no way that thing is any more stealth then say... the F117 made back in the 70's or 80's. Meaning the Chinese are still 20-30 years behind.

Everybody is making such a big deal of this, there is no threat from this plane either economic, physical, or political.

It can fly according to that video above..period..lol

@johnrbarringer Bigger plane doesn't necessarily mean bigger radar signature. What matters is how much of the radar signal gets back to the tower. Look at the, B2, thats a big plane but has a small radar signature.

Are you kidding me? First of all, was that FOG or Smog? I hardly saw the J-20 when it took off and it looks simular to the F-22 but way larger.

I think US's lead in fighter planes has gone. I read reports that the F-22 needs 30 hours of servicing for each hour in flight. Just google "Fighter F-22 problem". Also wonder why the stealth planes like B117 and B1 saw little action and all are retired now while some of the WW2 and Vietnam war planes are still in service? May be it is telling us something. The Russian first contacted the Chinese on the T-50 joint venture but China turned down the deal before India picked it up. The way I see it these fighters are things of the past. The bet is on who can develop the X-37 like space crafts first. Once you have a spacecraft carry bombs circling the earth like a GPS satellite, you could drop a bomb anywhere anytime. The current GPS system only takes 24 satellites to cover the whole earth. With 24 of these babies up there, you could bomb anywhere in the world within a few seconds with a click of the mouse. I read another report that China is testing it X37 like craft too. Once everyone has armed the space, all the war toys we know today are just toys.

This looks similar to the Russian T-50 Jet

I don't think this will be much of a rival for the F-22 (I'm not sure about the F-35, though).

I have been waiting for this for awhile. I saw this coming.
1. The leak that Lockgead denies (f-35).
2. The cancellation of the f-22 program.
3. The cuts to military spending.

So why does all this matter?
This plane inlets look more like the f-35 than the f-22. The fact that there are 2 engines gives it a Thrust 2 Weight Ratio probobly closer to the f-22. Which means it probobly will have supercruise, like the f-22, but the f-35 does NOT. Probobly Super Manuverability Like the f-22, but the f-35 NOT. See the trend here?

The fact that Lockhead deny's they lost data makes it more obvious that they did. The fact that China's planes LOOKS so much like our Fifth Gen. Fighters is shady! Remember they make a big chunk of the U.S. electronics and U.S. Government Allowed this.

So they are catching up to the U.S. even if NO one admits it.

Scary

Close but no cigar. I'll be the first one to admit that is "looks cool" but it no where near close to the F-22. The F-22 has upgraded from years of experience, this J-20 is basically a mock-off American and Euro-Fighters. Every natin has something to offer. Bring sometihng new to the table ,China.

First of all, why is everyone treating China like s***?
You Westerners, have insulted our country for money before in the past (I know my history, you came into China, forcing its doors to opium, because you were unable of surpassing the Chinese economic powerhouse in manufacturin goods like silk, laquerware, etc... so you invaded us with steamships.)

Then you accuse Asians, Arabs, Russians, Africans of imperialism? When you yourselves oppressed us + tried to drug us with opium, etc.? No! Let us have an empire of our own for one, not just the West!

In addition, the J-20; do not underestimate it, nor do you understime the PAk-FGA, the T-50, the K-FX (Korea), or the Mitsubishi Shinshin ATD-X!

These aircraft are fairly modernised with everything that you have in your Eurofighters or F-22s/F-35s!

We have just as much potential of building highly technologically advanced & sohpisticated military hardware as you are! We are not dogs. We will one day band under one Supreme Imperial Coalition Order of Arabs, Asians, Africans, Russians, bent on getting our vengeance on the West, as well as overthrowing their position!

Long Live China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Libya, Egypt, along with all the others who fought to stand against Western dreams for oil & money!

China, I stand by you, build the stealth fighter!
