China's J-20 Stealth Plane, in Profile

The Defense Ministry of the People’s Republic of China would like to wish you a happy new year – and welcome you into a new era. China’s first known stealth aircraft (maybe) appeared across the Web over the past week or so in a series of pictures depicting what appear to be high-speed taxi tests at Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute’s airfield. Reportedly known as the J-20, the emergence of the alleged long-range single-seater suggests China is ahead of schedule in its plans for a revamped air force and could have a stealth plane in the sky by 2017, three years earlier than expected.

China’s pursuit of a stealth military plane has been well-publicized by both China and others in the defense business (U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates predicted last year that China would field an operational stealth plane by 2020). But its emergence for testing so soon indicates that China is ahead of the game.

And it seems China wants everyone to know it without saying so outright. According to Bill Sweetman over at Aviation Week, the test airfield is not extremely secure and can be viewed from several public areas. Photography is officially forbidden, yet security was allowing cell phone photography near the premises, and though there was an early “effort” to censor photos that emerged on Chinese message boards, the People’s Republic quickly relaxed those efforts as well.

So what do we know about the J-20 from these pics? For one, it’s big and it’s long, suggesting it can carry heavy weapons loads and lots of fuel for long-range missions (it also suggests it likely won’t be launching from the aircraft carriers China also reportedly is developing). Comparison to vehicles on the ground shows the J-20 to be some 75 feet long with a 45-foot wingspan – bigger than the F-22. It also has a higher ground clearance than the F-22, suggesting it can load larger munitions like air-to-surface weapons.

The real question, it seems, is whether the J-20 pictured here is a proper prototype or a technology demonstrator. We’ll find out when China either does or doesn’t roll out further J-20s for flight tests. Or when China drops another hint to the world via “secret information” leaked all over the Web.

Looks like a pos, but this means China is finally coming out of their shell and catching up with the world. Which could be good...or bad.

Well, I don't imagine it is too difficult to build one once you let the USA do all the R&D and you just hack into their computer's and steal the tech... It is time to get Obama outta office and get someone in there who will put the US back on the forefront!

^ I agree with everything he says. And i forgot about the hacking thing =P oops

Looking at the cross-section of this aircraft, it doesn't look all that 'stealthy'.

China: "Here's our new stealth jet."
U.S.: "Stealth jet? We've had those for years!"
China: (aside) "That's what YOU think, ignorant white devils..."

If something like this concerns us, then wait until the Chinese "drop hints" on their ability to mine minerals such as Deuturium from the surface of Mars, effectively sealing up 99% of the future supply of future energy (fusion) sources for themselves-25 years before anyone else thought they could...

@Rooskies2006
What exactly does Obama have to do with this? Take your Obama-hating comments back where they belong - on Foxnews' website.

Now regarding your comment on China hacking into our computers, they really didn't need to do that to make a bigger F22 clone. Anyone can go buy an accuratly scaled model to get the basic shape, all it takes is a little research to find out what kind of engines are in it, and several other basic specs.

And by the way, the USA is still at the forefront, we still are the baddest MF'ers on the planet. The only people that think otherwise are your friends on the Right.

If being a military servicemember has taught me one thing, it's that the general public is far more concerned about the "secret tech" being developed in other countries than what's being developed within our own borders. We have some SCARY stuff under wraps here in the US, and I'm NOT talking about Area 51 gimmicks either.

HA China is still making a jet that require a pilot. LOL.

But that design sure looks a lot like the OLD US design. I hope China gives a special thanks for help to LORAL SPACE, Bill Clinton, Diane Feinstein and of course POLSI. As they all GAVE US air and space technology to china.
China should give a big shout out to the US for keep the H1B visa system in place so Chinese tech workers could come here and get paid to take some plans. Finally china should thank the US tax payer for PAYING FOR THE CHINESE TO ATTEND US universities.
THANKS ALL.

Looks like it is made with lead paint and cadmium.

@fletchr,
Remember the toxic Shrek cups made in the USA? Cadmium contamination is what America is famous for ;)

we americans need to embrace change and acknoledge a rising nation... (golf clap) and just for kicks i kinda pictured this chinastealth with training wheels on it. lol Now granted they are making these just incase we or russia happen to take an offensive turn towards them but in the long run i truly believe that such an up and coming nation would never fire until fired upon. (insert topgun music) And we know damn well we're out everythinged by them except infastructure.
Side note:
i voted for obama only because of the color of his skin... horrible i know but it's over and yes he's not the greatest pres... but i'd rather listen to a calm cool obama than a guy who's climactic point in life should have been opening the nicest hunting camp in the world... not a father puppeted pres. now we can move on as a more equal, peaceful nation... possibly world because of it. Despite our inevitable humbling due to such recent economic boom/collapse i feel we wont be so quick to jump on risky bandwagons anymore. we are a damn good nation with the infastructure to carry on as leaders of the world for years. i say we welcome the rise of china personally.

oh and the US definitely has some amazing tech that wont come to public knowlege until their long retired. we still rule. so chillax rooskies and have some brewskies.

~forward ever Backward NEVER!

@fletchr

Yes... because your eyes are spectrometers...

Just wait until we bring out the plasma rifles, the rail cannons, the armies of robots including the Big Dog that can navigate almost any terrain and maintain it's balance while carrying huge amounts of supplies, the ultra wide band cameras that let us see through walls, the smart bullets that correct their trajectory to hit targets in addition to our missile intercepting lasers, LRADs, XM-25s and all the stuff we DON'T know about.

We're developing power armor right in public view, yet very few recognize what's going on.

We're one next generation power source away from giant mechs.

Add that to the invisibility cloaks and carbon nanotube fibers that absorb light and trap it for snipers on top of the weapon systems that allow them to hit a target from around 2 miles away with an explosive round.

Our boys are deploying iPhones and iPads into the field for advanced data management and issuance of orders while tracking the battlefield in real-time.

We almost had electric, automated tanks.

A Chinese stealth fighter is no threat to us, especially with a fleet of Raptors and pilots who have actual EXPERIENCE piloting them.

I would love to see a J-20 in it's first dog fight against a Raptor with an experienced pilot.

I'm ranting, but you get the idea...

Most of what is being posted here is pure fantasy. The US is severely limited by the current economic crisis. Whereas China is an emerging tech superpower that holds much of our debt. I feel sorry for anyone that is younger than 30-40 yrs old. The shutdown of our space mission should be a forewarning of times to come. If and when the world reserve currency switches from the dollar and oil can be purchased in a currency other than dollars, look out! You will see the US with our massive debt freefall into chaos.

Front profile of the aircraft looks very similar to an F-22 or F-35. Not exact, but a striking resemblance.

@Fireballfrwd,

If that wasn't a highly misinformed comment.. than it was most definitely an overestimated and highly delusional one.

It's not completely wrong..just so over-dramatic.

The landing gear doors and weapon bays aren't "toothed" like the F-22 or the JSF, neither are the intakes(this makes for gaps and surfaces that increase bounce-back on the radar). The exhaust doesn't seem to have any mechanism for dispersing the heat so I bet its susceptible to heat seeking weapons ... the surfaces are at least angled to deflect radar. I wouldn't say its "stealth" but at the very least it is a reduced radar cross section (makes a large jet like this look like a small cessna on radar).

Not overly impressive but then again China is an industrial GIANT, imagine how many they could produce in a short amount of time.

Also add they "let" these photos get out; China is not a government to simply allow something like that to happen so easily.

Russia has its T-50 stealth fighter, so it is no surprise that China has a competitor. Neither the T-50 nor the J-20 will compete head-to-head with the F-22, but they will be much much less expensive, and therefore more numerous. The Russian T-50 was jointly developed with India, so China is probably more concerned about countering Indian stealth fighters than American ones.

@mesh...I hope you're right and I am wrong, but I don't think so. As for it being overly-dramatic, perhaps but people need to be shocked back to reality every now and then. This country, this world relies on oil for everything and the price is about to skyrocket.

Since WHEN is our space program being shut down? Obama wanted to shut down NASA's programs for this year, and NASA basically flipped him the bird, told him to STFU and GTFO it, and even tacked on TWO additional space launches for this year.

Considering some of the stuff being reported not only here on Popsci, but elsewhere on the internet, our space program is in no danger of being shut down any time soon.

As nice as it is to read all this Has anybody taken the time to look at the rear of the plane!?! Look at A RAPTOR and look at the J20. The J20 down't Have vector thrust! yea we could go down the road about it down't matter but any country worth its stuff who is creating advance fighters would use this tech.
!!BUT THEN AGAIN I COULD BE WRONG!!

Asa ASAsArtWoRKs

plain and simple propaganda. UAVs r reality duh

Some Chinese company bought the Steel plant that was in my home town valley and shipped it by freight piece by piece to China. The cloud of smog that hung in my valley is now gone to another valley far away, along with it went the Steel infrastructure and 3000+ jobs. This has happened all over our country. Now that steel is being used to produce a war machine that only has one possible purpose.

1 on 1 an F-22 would win, but this looks more like a prototype strike jet, not a dedicated fighter anyways. Its not really a fair comparison. Just because they look similar does not mean they are designed to serve the same purpose.

Its not the USA or the F-22 China is worried about, they want to unify China which means taking Taiwan. The J-20's main adversaries would be F-15's, and should it fight the United States it would more likely come up against F-18's. F-22's met a budget cut and their numbers aren't that high (blame the economy, Fireballfrwd right about that).

Its a freakin f-14 with pieces from a f-22 stuck on.

Upon research online, I have noticed a recurring pattern for these stealth aircraft that these countries are making.
First off, I don't know if the planes in this link are in scale or not
http://defense-update.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/j20-t50-f22.jpg
but so far each is larger than the F-22 which points to, first off, fuel consumption
A: Larger = guzzles more fuel
B: I doubt the others have super cruise (F22 can fly at mach speeds for extended periods of time WITHOUT after burners, the other jets seem to have standard thrusters)
C: Maneuverability: though the J-20 employs canards and large delta wings, due to its size the maneuverability has to be decreased, same with the T-50, not to mention the F22 has thrust vectoring, added to its size I believe the F22 will be more maneuverable in a dog fight.

Next off that you will see from the pics, is going to be obvious stealth. The J-20 looks like a J-10 Mig, the only differences are the F22 shaped nose and 2 thrusters instead of 1. That shape (from an aerial view) doesn't seem stealthy at all. The T50 looks stealthy, but stealthy like a brick. The F22 is based off of information from multiple successfull US stealth aircraft, not just in shape but in composition of the skin, internal components, noise, thruster cooling (which none of the others look like they employ) and other components.

To put things im true perspective, the T50 is a MIG 31 (or 25) without mach 3 ability, its an interceptor not a dog fighter, the J-20 according to this article, is essentially a B2 bomber with slightly more maneuverability, but not as much stealth, the F22 is (i should say F/A-22) is like an F15 with stealth, the F15 was built specifically for the use of shooting down other airplanes, maneuverable, reliable and simply awesome. The A in F/A was added later to the 22 because its easy to incorporate ground hitting ability.

Let's face the fact that China's technology is improving and no country can stop that... While the U.S. is busy on wars, maintaining world peace if i'm not mistaken and engaging different worldwide military affairs these costs a lot to your beloved U.S., with increasing poverty and U.S. struggling as the balance of this world for almost everything budget for your military adva. budget will be cut off...Soon you'll wake up stock with your F-22 f and F's variants.

Why?
U.S. is no longer the no.1 exporter of copper same with other metals ' anyone correct me if im wrong.
- you dont hold the record of the fastest internet
- you dont export rare earth minerals.
- U.S. no.1 in military expenditure
just too many...

ANY COUNTRY HAS A ROOM for Improvements. LETS NOT THINK THAT WE ARE THE BEST lets stay low and Blow them, besides what's the point of displaying that J20 if it will not compete to its enemy..Question here is who's china's enemy and why are they striving to improve their weapons.???

Don't player hate, hate the game.

China is like the guy next door, who used to be very poor. Nowadays things are changing for the better, and he is able to afford allot of exspensive stuff that he could not afford before.

If you where used to be the bully with the latest gadgets, offcourse your are not going to like that guy who's catching up on you with the latest gadgets and who you owe a huge amount of money.

C'mon, sure it looks good, but slap on some black paint over the plywood construction, and anything can look good. The question is...can it perform? Or is it all a Strategic Media Hype.

Who knows how the Chinese think. Won't be the first time they "produce" and "reveal" some product, only for the rest of the world to find out later on it was just a ploy for some political or Feudal reason.

Personally, I think the plans were bought from EBay, with engine parts and instructions straight from Kijiji.

China is not worried much about us, nor are they working that hard to 'keep up with the Joneses'. They are kicking back and laughing their asses off while we spend ourselves into oblivion, and make enemies out of nations and people who respected us highly after the last world war. They do not have to build a stealth jet fighter or an aircraft carrier to keep ANYONE from attacking them. They know plainly what Americans refuse to publicly declare, that most of our worst enemies are among our most protected people. How many trillions have we spent so that we can get a cut of Afghanistan's estimated 1-4 trillion (PopSci) in mineral wealth? Does anyone really think that we fear a terrorist attack as much as all we have supposedly sacrificed to 'prevent' one? Is there really a nation anywhere that does not know we will carpetbomb their nation if we suspect them of allowing an attack to come from their nation? Bring our troops home, start corruption trials, seize our funds and let us get back to work now.

Slang via text and mockery of world superpowers makes us all look very ignorant, great way to represent our strong society. China has been our ally and there advances aren't noticed by many of us due to a lack of understanding and general care, the things see the chinese do are things like "make faulty products" and "hack computers", clearly that's the only thing China is capable of. (lol)

The US is as much a super power as we are out of debt, when will we stop living under this illusion, it's as if we've become comfortably numb, and not aware of our surroundings.
