@Male Birth Control Pill
Every time the subject of the "Male Pill" comes out, the lazy reporter goes for the cheap shot. If you wrote this article about the "Female Birth Control Pill" and included that crack about "Some fear that women will just lie about being on the pill" you would get lynched. And well you should.
The drug companies still haven't learned that health care and relieving suffering throughout the world is the supreme goal. This ought to be their number one priority. Yet it always comes down to the profit motive and the love of money that inadvertently creates even more unnecessary suffering.
When drug research is left to the public market, its no surprise that the most research goes to the drugs that will yield the greatest profit. If you want the companies to make world health their number one priority, then the governments need to get involved. The free market economy doesn't work for all industries, maybe drug research needs to be overtaken by the government too.
On cancer vaccines, this information is at best years old if not decades out of date. I work in a lab where we run preclinical studies and phase I trials with immunotherapy in various types of cancers.
Current research has been testing vaccines in numerous numbers of cancers, not just melanoma, such as leukemias, pancreatic, breast, ovarian, and non-small cell lung cancers, just to name a few. In some cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, the body already has all the antigens it needs to kill the cancer, but the tumor environment is immunosupressive, allowing for cancerous cells to escape immunosurveillance. The point of many of these vaccines is to overcome this.
Secondly, the vaccine discussed here is only one type of vaccine. It involves performing a leukapheresis to collect immune cells, then, most often pulsing dentritic cells with tumor associated antigens with the hope of these stimulated antigen-presenting cells leading to stimulation of helper and cytotoxic T cells, part of your cell specific immune defense, against the antigen on your cancer cell, killing the cancer cells.
Like I said, this is only one type, and there are many others, many which are a series of infusions. TNFerade™, OncoVEX GM-CSF, MORAb-009, SS1P/SS1(dsFv)PE38 are very few examples of which that use different strategies for the same purpose. Of course this gets much more complicated and is a huge simplification...but come on Popular Science, do your homework before writing things. Reading a introduction paragraph on cancer vaccines could have told you this.
Reverse-aging pill? O_o...
Exercise pill? HELL YES.
Yep, more "men won't use it" re the male BCP, when in fact, that is total hogwash and everyone knows it. Why would a man say he is using it when he isn't unless he what, wants the woman to become the mother of his kids AND risk she would 1) abort or 2) sue for child support and deny access or 3) sue him or falsely accuse him of something when she learns she is preggers?
If anything, it's women who lie about their BCP usage, and everyone knows it. The truth here is not that men won't use the BCP if they have one; it's that they will! Both feminists and conservative social thinkers have a devil's bargain on this but for different reasons. The fems want repro power to stay exclusively in the hands of women. Social conservatives want to keep the kids coming no matter what the cost and don't like BCPs anyway. Between the two, the conspiracy to suppress development of the male BCP continues unabated. But as we have learned from modern history, if an invention can be completed and used, it will. So it is just a matter of time. Then we'll see how the feminists like a dose of their own damned medicine!
A smart pill AND a exercise pill? Where and when can I get me one of Those?
