In perhaps the greatest article ever run in Popular Science, we demonstrated several methods of hunting down and killing rats. Here are some of our top tips for trapping the wily beasts.
- Keep a clean trap. Though their propensity for carrying diseases might convince you otherwise, "rats prefer to live and die in clean places."
- Pour carbon bisulphide into rat burrows and seal them up. "A gassing like this will get them all, young and old."
- Cover barrels with paper or tipping lids, so when the pitter-pattering feet of the rats scamper across them, they'll fall into the water below and drown.
- Hiring a cat won't always get the job done. The picture on the right here shows a cat strung up alongside the rats she neglected to kill aboard a ship. "She, in turn, was overlooked by the fumigating expert," we wrote.
