Physicist Stephen Hawking, speaking at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said if humans don't migrate from the planet Earth to colonize other planets, they'll face extinction in 1,000 years. So, phew, we're good, guys. We've got like 900-plus years to just sit on this. That's a relief. [RT]
What is this, reddit? Just posting a picture with a couple sentences is not worthy of a scientific magazine, even if it is only Popsci.
Cool story bro!
you have been zerberted, lol.
Stephen Hawking is so cool to want to experience weightlessness of outer space.
I wonder if perhaps Stephen Hawking is actually an extra terrestrial. His species could be from a lower gravity planet which would explain his condition. He seems quite pleased in the low Gs. I'm not saying it's for sure, just very likely.
So, to survive from or ideal habitat we need to move to barren, poisonous(if not devoid of atmosphere)deserts?
Statements like this make me question the things Hawkings says sometimes. Just like the one about any alien race we meet will want to kill us and enslave us. What?
By the time we figure out space travel we will most likely be sustainable. Otherwise we'll all die on our way to HD 1298 AB.
Sure would have been nice to hear his reasoning for this.
How does he know what will happen through a thousand years.
The planet progressing as it is will probably be unliveable in a thousand years but who's to say things won't turn around?
New technology always changes the name of the game.
If we can develop technology for space travel, then, we can definitely use technology to clean up pollution in our atmosphere.
If colonising another planet is the only option, then, it also has to be another galaxy to avoid extinction!
Obviously Colin Lecher isn't paid by the word. That being said, I wish he was involved in writing the Obamacare legislation.
In a thousand years, it will be Steven Hawking's wheelchair mounted hologram which will roll out of the time vault on Terminus to guide humanity's path into the next galactic empire...
Steven Hawking, I can only assume (given the COMPLETE LACK OF DETAILS OR REFERENCES IN THIS ARTICLE), has found a mathematical psychohistorical algorithm which predicts the downfall of the human race on Earth, given our current rate of environmental destruction, depleting food sources, and rampant population growth of stupid people.
Steven Hawking is one of my heroic inspirations in life, he has done more for Humanity without lifting a finger in the past 20 years than most of us couch potatoes and forum trolls will achieve in the next 200 years.
This is Malthusian nonsense.
Stephen Hawking is a brilliant physicist, but Yogi Berra is brilliant, too. At least Yogi knows that "It's hard to predict things, especially about the future."
I think a bit of humility is in order for Professor Hawking.
Hari Seldon would disagree.
Yes, I would have liked to hear a little bit of his reasoning as well. But this is poopsci after all. I would hope that Stephen Hawking has taken into account many factors that elude us, the common folk, lol: Population, genetics, impacts from space objects, human nature, to name a few... Things beyond our control technologically even in a thousand years. But who knows what his reasoning was, thanks poopsci! I guess I'll go read the full story somewhere else.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
I just re-read the 'article' again. Took me all of 5 seconds, and yes I looked at the pretty picture too lol. But I noticed one thing about poopsci writers lately. If its a left leaning story, the article is extensive, sometimes pages long. But when its nothing they can really spin (as perhaps the reasoning they left out), its a 5 second write up.. and the last line? that incredible observation by the writer was, well... just brilliant poopsci! brilliant!
I laughed see ha ha.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
Somehow I doubt that Professor Hawking is really pleased with his prediction being paired with this pic of him obviously having so much fun. Either there is something in what I've noticed here, or Steven Hawking might not be the guy we thought he was at all.
On Topic: It's no great mystery that we will go to space as our population increases. If we have world war that will spur progress on faster. If we ain't dead as a specie, we are going to space. I'm also curious as to his reasoning-and that 1000 year mark though. Doesn't seem like he is anticipating much from energy research or space technologies anytime soon.
Why are we so surprised about this? These kind of predictions are going to be more common now that it is official that the Iranians have the capacity to see the future. That technology is already spreading!
Without the existance of God, he is right.
But with the existance of God , he is totally and absolutely Wrong.
I'm on the second part. Because I can able find and feel the existance of God. And can able to prove successfully the existance of God.
I think that, if Modern Science ready to search for God and His World before searching for another space for human survival , it become more worth.
Unsubstantiated. Hawking, Mayans, etal and yet the world remains. The naked apes keep spawning.
A belated April fool, Mr. Hawking.
Mr. Hawking wrote a book with a bunch of mathematical formulas in it. His colleagues marveled at his achievement given the disease that he suffers.
It appears Mr. Hawking has decided to showbiz his fame.
That prediction is worth nothing. Mr. Hawkins can not foretell the future. It would of course be a great boon to mankind if we could spread ourselves beyond this planet. The moment we give up trying to find new frontieres that moment we give up hope for a better tomorrow and we are doomed.
Why the Brits revere this "man", I'll never know. He's very annoying. He needs to stick with his entertaining interpretations of Nigerian fertility ceremonies (black hole theories). With his Robo-Voice gadget he never fails to make me chuckle.
I believe that Mr. Hawk, ing is on the right path in his thoughts and he added a thousand as a rough estimate not to be taken literal. More importantly if we are going to have impartial arguments for the progress of humanity we shouldn't worshiping one individual that's ridiculous, where is your dignty?
I respect Hawkings but he is overly optimistic. Humanity won't last 200 years at the rate it's destroying itself.
And mankind will never colonize other planets because Venus is too hot (850+ degrees) and Mars cannot hold an atmosphere. So there is ABSOLUTELY no place inhabitable in this Solar system.
Stars? Not going to happen in our life times and before we destroy the planet. It would take thousands of years to go to the nearest start and back. By then will be extinct.
The magnetic currents of the Earth are currently in the process of collapsing to later switch opposites. In the big scheme of time of Earth, it happens in seconds. We might actually see it happen within out own life time. As the magnetic currents\poles stop for a time, the Earth will be showered with radiation and 100,000 of cancer deaths will happen yearly.
On a positive note, humanity is moving to a higher level of enlightenment. ;)

an explanation might be nice...
The amount of resources required for such an undertaking to teraform or transport to a livable planet is so great it's better to figure out how to live on this planet instead.
