This self-portrait was taken by Mars rover Curiosity's MAHLI camera on Sept. 19 (its 44th sol, or Martian day, if you're keeping track). It shows off one of four logos on its arm--logos for NASA, the Jet Proulsion Laboratory, and the Curiosity mission itself are also represented. But this piece of anodized aluminum swag is unique for causing the most spontaneous shouts of U-S-A! U-S-A! back at home.

Five amazing, clean technologies that will set us free, in this month's energy-focused issue. Also: how to build a better bomb detector, the robotic toys that are raising your children, a human catapult, the world's smallest arcade, and much more.

Now THAT'S the color adjusted reality we like. Local visual conditions are fine in analysis roles, and even for regular curious people, but the impact of a shot like this one brings Mars into the living room when I already know the atmo and lighting conditions anyway.
I was born in Soviet block. Have to say the way America behaves these days reminds me of what was happening there years before it collapsed. Flags everywhere, newspapers full of "national pride" and "great achievements" of socialistic engineering. Like there is any "socialistic" or "american" engineering. Just look at names behind these things. These people made it. Not politicians sticking flags and slogans everywhere. Time ago I met Russian in a bar- drunk, depressed and humiliated - after some time he begun to talk with pride of days in Soviet union - all the power and respect "they" had. Everybody was afraid of them. Nowadays it seems to me America is spreading more fear than Russia. Not freedom. All those young men in Afghanistan walking without weapon into enemy's military camp - they know they are fighting for their faith, culture and freedom. They know they will never come back. And yet they have courage to do that. Fearlessly. Look at our governments now - full of paranoid cowards. All they can do is tighten "security" and send other people to death. In light of this as I used to laugh at "conspiracy" theories about 11th September I am not laughing anymore. It is day after day harder to choose which version I should believe as there is no way to be sure.
If NASA continues showing close picture views of Curiosity and close picture views of Mars, it kind opens the field of never landing on Mars in the first place (conspiracy theories) and all these pictures are faked in a studio. NASA did kind of brag about the landing, being rather impossible in the first place. Hey, I'm just say'n. ;)
Oh, nice deep color picture above, tho....
America the suck.

Its a beautiful thing.
Pride is a double edge sword, that is true.
In this instance its a good thing and is motivational. Hope this helps capture the spirit of competition and inspiration.
Blind pride is bad, but this is not the case. So rejoice in the accomplishments of humanity! God bless the USA!
Sounds like the jealous ramblings of an envious person to me. Trying desperately to criticize in anyway possible. I guess our economic structure advanced educational structure and free society hasn't paved the way and footed the bill for curiosities achievements. Wouldnt your time be better spent appreciating the fresh flow of information and science, rather than pissing on it? It's painfully obvious you do care, and quite enjoy the data, but the flag insults you because it is not an ensign you have any origins from. It's an achievement all should be grateful of. Particularly Americans, our grandchildren will be paying for it. You poor wasted soul.

I also come from Eastern Block and I just love that NASA (funded by US taxpayers) is doing something for humanity. All people on Earth benefit from space research. This will became more obvious when we start collonisation of space. Which is ineviatble.
Regarding US flags and patriotism everywhere - EU is denouncing patriotism of member states - we all are going to be ruled by EUcomissars (any resemblabce?) and be patriotic to the great EU-soviet... This is why you feel uneasy?
I'm perfectly OK with stars and stripes!
Kazakhstan! Kazakhstan! Kazakhstan!
American Shame you mean. Bullying is forbidden in most schools. So should international bullying be.
