This has been a sensationally hot summer for America, with records breaking daily. But Greenland seems to have just claimed the heat-related phenomenon crown, with 97 percent of its ice sheet turning to slush. The even stranger part? It might be completely normal--at least for now.
The melting isn't a one-off event; every summer Greenland's ice melts some amount. But it's usually about half, and in the 30 years we've been keeping a satellite eye on the changes, we haven't seen anything like this. It was so out of the ordinary, in fact, that scientists from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory questioned if it was caused by some kind of malfunction. The melt had to be confirmed independently by other climatologists.
By July 8, according to the satellite information, 40 percent was melted. Four days later it was up to 97 percent, and even the area around the highest point of the ice sheet, Summit Station, showed signs of melting. At the same time, a ridge of warm air known as a heat dome was affecting the country, which likely had a lot to do with the melting.
We know from analysis of ice cores that the last time melting like this happened was circa 1889, which, you'd logically think, would mean this was completely unexpected. But it wasn't. Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data, said in a statement: "Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time."
Researchers don't know yet if this will contribute to sea levels rising in Greenland, but if it happens again in the next few years, that could threaten the stability of the ice sheet, which would mean major cause for concern.

Yeah, we're screwed.
@Aldron, explain this away.
that ish is crazy!!! well hopefully the pattern is correct, but if not then yeah, we are in for some water rising, resource lacking, every man for himself type of life :). Dont worry, the only thing guaranteed in life is death anyways..
Taxes, you forgot taxes!
Ahahahaha! "...Right on Time". Someone slap that b***h. How about the records across the rest of the world? You know, all Im going to say is that, if there were a global climate change happening about to affect all the people on Earth, no government would admit it anyways. Something like that would certainly make people very hard to govern. Who gives a crap about socioeconomic s when they are about to go through what they are about to go through.
You would think they would be doing a lot more to satisfy our climate worries, than having some woman try to tell us that 97% of a potential 25 foot sea level rise, just melted and, is nothing to worry about. Hahaha. If I lived anywhere close to sea level I would certainly be worrying. Ice core samples showed that 97% of Greenland turned to slush huh? So they took ice core samples from that many different places in Greenland huh? All those samples showed slush? Lets see that data.
Well I guess we are about to see soon arent we. So... how long did it stay slush in the core samples? A year? 2 years? Just during the summer months?
I always keep a sharp object with me so I can poke holes in the crap that they try to pull over my eyes. "...Right on time". hahaha. BS
"(Reuters) - An iceberg twice the size of Manhattan broke free from Greenland's massive Petermann Glacier, which could speed up the march of ice into northern waters, scientists said on Wednesday." That was July 18, 2012.
Apparently NASA has been keeping an eye on all sorts of Ice lateley, especially Greenland. How come? Also, NASA is a government controlled agency, why would we think they give us an objective view?
"Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth. There is no spoon."
Eeek, the virus that killed the wicked which of the west is spreading! WE ARE ALL MELTING! "...oh, what a cruel, cruel world...."!
It's just the surface ice ... not the entire ice sheet. The sheet is 2 miles thick at some points. They mean that a thin layer (millimeters?) on the surface of the whole sheet showed signs of melting. Normally only half of this thin layer melts each summer.
D13, you seem to forget that climate works in cycles. Things like this happen naturally. Climate change won't make things all hot all the time. Only change the frequency at which these 'freak events' happen.
True tert but we arent dealing with just simply Greenland. We are dealing with a much larger heat wave. What is impacting Greenland now isnt really isolated to greenland. Also no correlation has been made to the changes going on around the world in the ice records. For JPL to let a single scientist make a statement that "this is normal for Greenland" while making no such claim for the rest of the heat wave that is happening at the same time...little fishy. Thats all. Maybe "...slap that b***h" was a little harsh but its also a little insulting to me. NASA at the same time just produced s heat map that shows record "heat wave" across North America. I will spare all the info on the upgrades to hubble, the new south pole telescopes and all amazing activity of solar flares and the correlation of neutrinos, from solar flares, adding to global temps. The buzz in the scientific community on climate change is mostly hush and none of it is in line with conservative cyclical geologic patterns. Of course, im not a news reporter but, if i were...i would quit and tell my friends and family that Peru is a great place to live. :)

Greenland isn't a country. It is a part of Denmark :O
unfortunetly there are much worse thangs that can happen then flooding if two much fresh water gets into the ocean. first of all the fresh water is always melting and going into the ocean wich brings oxygen to the all of the creatures in the ocean becuse the fresh water and salt water are not the same consitancy wich creates underwater currents that deliver oxygen to all the creates of the sea much like a bubbler gives oxygen to the fish in your aquarium wich is a good thang the problem is if two much fresh water gets into the ocean it is posible the water would begin to mix would most likely slowly stop providing oxygen to the creatures of the sea. i beleave that if this happens even on a small scale it would truley be awfull.. many of the countrys in asia have a deit that is mainly sea food wich means if there food supply starts to dwindle they will begin eating other thangs wich would drive up food prices dramaticly wich could lead to mass starvation, oh but it dont end there no that would be to easy if the creatures of the ocean start to decay on a large scale it is posible the deadly gases from there decomasition could lead to postionous gases to be realeased from the ocean and poison many coastal regions and even posibly get into the clouds and produce awfull acidic rains that would be horrible,,, this is an awfull posiblity that i truly hope never comes to pass
As a well spent day brings happy sleep, so life well used brings happy death.

While the melting ice is significant, I don't believe their is a government conspiracy to hide the truth about global warming. The truth is our planet's weather changes on a scale much larger than decades. We've only been recording weather with satellites and advanced technology for the past 70 years or so. So how can we judge what is normal and what isn't for a 150 year time period?
D13 is fear mongering on a subject he can only speculate about. The facts are: This has happened in the past and its consistent with the data collected. Not once in your elaborate explanation did you cite factual evidence of a larger problem. Yes climate is changing, yes it will affect weather/crops and such. But to exclaim their's a big government cover up every time something happens gets annoying.
The science community has clearly displayed redundantly, the cycles of ice melting on Earth is sync with the suns rays. Science has also show, the we humans have excellrated the process with with global carbon gases. Additonally, we humans are just pollution the Earth as well and killing of life every where.
I fear, one year 7 billion or more in the future, will be reduce to 1% world poppulation and those living will just be getting by barely....
GOD BLESS ALL! If I must die, I want to live and die as a Christian. Praise God always and show this by to GOD, by loving and caring to others always! Take care. ;)
The only people still wasting time arguing about climate change on the internet are part of the problem. Not because you're right or wrong, but because whether you're right or wrong, it's only by accident.
The day I go see anybody other than a doctor for my medical problems, slap me. The day I believe any schmuck's ramblings about climate change on the internet, journalists included, slap me.
Let's hope it all melts because I want to take advantage and buy new ocean front property -- on what's left of Florida anyway as most will be under the sea.
IF this is true - look at the dates. It only took 4 days to go from a little melting to almost all of it melting. NOT posible.
Have any of you believers even been around snow and ice?
At the 3M main headquaters here, they pile up the snow plowed off their parking lot into a HUGH pile of snow. Of course it will turn to ice as the temps warm. This ice gets covered with dirt from the parking lot as the layers get added to the pile from each time it snows enough to plow, as well as just from wind blowing more on top of it. That ice pile under that dirt and stuff can last into June, even with temps in Aril and May into the 80s and higher!!!!
So that fact that a HUGH area of snow melted in that short of time is not possible and if it is would mean a VERY HIGH temp increase, not possible in Greenland.
TravisJunky, who is fear mongering? Again, to say this is on time with other 150 year events is one thing. However, to say this is the same as those events, especially with the entire globe experiencing climate change, is quite another. As for gonvernment conspiracy, I simply state that we KNOW climate change is happening, however, where is the governments data that links world climate events? They don't want to put that out there do they? If they don't beleive its happening then why not show how all the climate events taking place are somehow geologic patterns? I mean, this woman pulls out ice core samples and says it happens all the time but, she doesnt say for how long and doesnt show any correlation to the exact size, or duration, of the previous melts. If your going to blanket the current warming into cyclical patterns then show the data that makes it just like the others. Was the earth in a warming when the previous melts took place?
Greenland represents roughly 20 - 25ft of sea level rise. Thats not some new oxygen for fish, thats possibly hundreds of feet of water in places. Oh, but the great TJunky isnt concerned. Like most, you would rather be in denial. Perhaps since you cant do anything about it anyways then why be afraid of it? Right?
So, in short, dont take my words to heart. Definitely dont tell me Im fear mongering though. Governments dont provide data on warming and they dont call it global warming. They dont do this why? Because they dont want to instill fear. Even if it were happening they still wouldnt tell you its happening. They have a motive not to cause panic and to make their job of geverning any more difficult. Argue that all you want. Its completely and totally true. So, WE are all left to take in that data that we see before our eyes and make our own assumptions, analyzations, etc. Just because you don't, that makes you a dumb**s. It doesn't make me a fear monger though.
Hey TJunky, Greenland just turned to slush! 57 precent of it happened in a few days!!! No worries though. Thats not at all alarming or something that warrants, not fear but, "RESPECT" for mother nature. Im not afraid of trains but I certainly wouldnt stand on the tracks while one is coming at me. Is that fear?
Go pour yourself a cold one and crack open a nice book. Everything is just fine.
"Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth. There is no spoon."
Oh and here you go TJunky and other skeptics... here is a nice article by James Hansen, NASA Climate Scientist, that reads more a like a future predition that is coming true. This is from May 9th, 2012:
"GLOBAL warming isn’t a prediction. It is happening...
Canada’s tar sands, deposits of sand saturated with bitumen, contain twice the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by global oil use in our entire history. If we were to fully exploit this new oil source, and continue to burn our conventional oil, gas and coal supplies, concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere eventually would reach levels higher than in the Pliocene era, more than 2.5 million years ago, when sea level was at least 50 feet higher than it is now. That level of heat-trapping gases would assure that the disintegration of the ice sheets would accelerate out of control. Sea levels would rise and destroy coastal cities. Global temperatures would become intolerable. Twenty to 50 percent of the planet’s species would be driven to extinction. Civilization would be at risk.
..That is the long-term outlook. But near-term, things will be bad enough. Over the next several decades, the Western United States and the semi-arid region from North Dakota to Texas will develop semi-permanent drought, with rain, when it does come, occurring in extreme events with heavy flooding. Economic losses would be incalculable. More and more of the Midwest would be a dust bowl. California’s Central Valley could no longer be irrigated. Food prices would rise to unprecedented levels.

please read the rest yourself. Not to mention that it isnt NASAs scientist that has the actual correct Solar Storm Model, but another who has predicted with extreme accuracy what is really taking place on the sun.
Now, I dont personally care what is causing the warming on our planet. It doesnt matter. Man or Mother Nature, makes no difference. Aknowledging that its happening is whats important. You who deny that anything is taking place are out of your minds and you are the part of natural selection that mother nature is going to take first. Plain and simple. Get some "fear" or some "respect", whatever you want to call it but, get it. Having a backup plan isnt a bad idea is it? I know it will interupt your meaningless lives of reality TV shows and making money, paying bills, paying for college, etc. but that isnt really important when changes in the Earth are happening on a magnitude that results in energies that are astronomical. You are sack of deleicate tissue that is extremely vulnerable to much smaller energies than those taking place.
You are nothing against Mother Nature. Respect "the change".
"Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth. There is no spoon."
lol climate wackos are all going "we told you so". XD
Solar activity has peaked this year, just as it was expected to, and Lord behold things got hotter. Who do these climate 'scientists' think they are fooling?
But then again, when things get 10 degrees colder they will still cry wolf. =.=
Not sure what your reading but Solar activity doesnt peak until 2013. Dont look at the revised NASA BS, look at all the solar models. In fact, NASA own solar propellar head stated that the peak is in 2013. Enjoy.
"An international panel of experts led by NOAA and sponsored by NASA has released a new prediction for the next solar cycle. Solar Cycle 24 will peak, they say, in May 2013 with a below-average number of sunspots. "
I know reading it hurts.
"Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth. There is no spoon."
D13,
Mmm, as the sun peaks later in 2013, does this just mean more slushies later too, combined with human carbon enhancing gases....
Most likely, we will see sea level rise. An obvious decrease in freshwater sources. The sun does play a part in it by an increased UV index and pan evaporation levels but, these could subside. In past geolic cycles, as the NASA scientist stated, Earth is now at its longest part of its orbit and this is usually a point at which we see cooling. Obviously not all the cycles are in line with where they should be. If these naysers, who actually prove Manmade warming by saying that the sun is totally normal, were right, then we shouldnt be seeing a warming trend right now. This is an irregular cycle and there is a direct correlation of warming to warming mediums in the atmosphere. That fairly scary evidence in my book. On the flip side, the Earth has filtered out much larger dust clouds from meteor impacts and volcanic activity so all hope is not lost. We are just going to see what mother nature does here. The fact that most countries removed ozone depleting CFC's of the shelves is more than a subtle clue that governments do believe in manmade warming. A lack of ozone ceratinly could increase pan evaporation which would have a significant impact on icesheets as well. If anything, lets pray that the Sun is the cause and that the next soloar miminum allows for a decrease in temperature and evaoporation.
Lastly, and possibly the most troubling thing, about mother nature, here... is that if you have that much slush, and she did not provide an equal amount of fruit syrup for that slush, she certainly didnt intend for us to make slushies. Of that I am certain. I also looked for some evidence of natural cones on Greenland and I found none of those either. This imbalance is the most worrysome. :)
"Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth. There is no spoon."
Warm ocean currents likely have more to do with Greenland's ice coverage than atmospheric temperatures. As for Greenland's ice melting causing sea levels to rise, why would it only occur near Greenland? And wouldn't the greatly reduced ice mass over the Greenland continent cause a slight rise in the land surface?
