Police in Capitán Prat Province, Chile, have stopped a refrigerated truck carrying nearly 6 tons of ice bound for cocktail bars in Santiago, and arrested the driver on suspicion of having thieved the ice from a glacier in a Patagonian national park.
We've seen polar-chilled liquor before, as well as elaborately frozen cocktails; but I don't know that glacial ice cubes add anything particularly special to a beverage that makes them worth the hauling.
The Jorge Montt glacier, from which the ice was harvested, is one of the fastest-shrinking glaciers on record; now we may know why.
Five amazing, clean technologies that will set us free, in this month's energy-focused issue. Also: how to build a better bomb detector, the robotic toys that are raising your children, a human catapult, the world's smallest arcade, and much more.

ahem* this guy's going to be catching more flakk then he deserves. i doubt there will be a maximum to his prison sentence.
to mars or bust!
Climate Change has made fear mongering neocons out of all of us and the Bush family laughs as they watch us condemn our own children to the greenhouse gas ovens with childish glee. Trust science? They gave us the pesticides and cancer causing chemicals that made environmentalism necessary in the first place. The worldwide scientific community is comprised of literally millions of experts and if this crisis had been real, wouldn’t we see the millions of scientists ACTING like they have kids too who will suffer? “They say it’s real.”, is no longer a good enough excuse to issue CO2 death warrants to our children.
As liberals, we are compelled to move forward with knowledge and compassion, not hold a spear of CO2 fear to our kid’s backs as the only motivator for environmental awareness. Just who was the real neocon in all this? And as liberals we are compelled to question challenge and doubt all authority in order to legitimize authority but for the last 26 years of CO2 crisis warnings we have goose stepped like obedient greenzis with petty hate, finger pointing and fear mongering.
Climate change was our Iraq War folks. We have moved on from the CO2 mistake.
Pollution is real but death for all in a CO2 climate crisis is not so be happy for your kids, not disappointed that they won’t face unimaginable suffering in a catastrophic climate crisis from Human CO2 after all.
Ya, it's a really a good and very informative post
thanks
U would think that being "scientists" they would realize that everything operates in cycles, even the earth. We as humans are not going to destroy climate, the earth would take care of our species before that ever happened. Its just another way some some jack a## to try and make a quick buck off fear. The guy in the article was just trying to take advatage of a renewable resource to create a business. Obama should have funded him for creating a green job. Really, aressted for ice. Good thing we got jails and prisons for these hardend criminals so tax payers can pay for their stays. I realize it didnt happen in America but I could see something just as petty happening. Stop the guy and fine him, how hard is that. Im sure they returned the ice to its home!

The Mayan know all about cycles and it points to an end of cycle 2012. The curious question is how did they know about such a long cycle, from so long ago? The starting point for the Mayan calendar is 3114 BC. The cycle of the Mayan calendar is a 1872000 day cycle as a whole. Why choose 1872000 day cycle in the first place?

I want to know how this guy did it. Did he just drive his truck right up to the edge of the glacier and chop of 5200 kg with an ice pick and load it up by hand?
".....Police in Capitán Prat Province, Chile, have stopped a refrigerated truck carrying nearly 6 tons of ice bound for cocktail bars in Santiago, and arrested the driver on suspicion of having thieved the ice from a glacier in a Patagonian national park...."
The driver was arrested on SUSPCION! Maybe it is stolen ice from the glacier. Maybe is just a truck load of ice and this is a CON to the buyer that this "Patagonain national park ice". Has the actual ice been identified yet?
I am sure a chemical analysis of the truck ice and the park ice can be compared.

Can someone please enlighten me as to what laws he broke? If I go into an american national park, pull some leaves off a tree, I'm not going to jail for it. When did owning ice come up? Do I own the snow once it lands in my yard? Can I sue oil companies for global warming destroying my snow reserves? Next someone will be arrested for home made solar and wind harvesting.

I dont want to live in a world where I cant grab some glacier ice and put it in my cup
I prefer my ice berg cubes to be 'diet ice berg cubes!'

Why the heck would this be theft? It's just natural rain water turned to ice? Get a life!
Ice is a renewable resource. If glacier reduction is an issue, there are ways to fix it. During the winter, when glaciers grow due to new precipitation events, ADD WATER.
If for every truckload of ice taken in summer a truckload of water was added to the ice in winter (knowing that the volumn increases with freezing's crystalization), then the glacier would grow.
In all but the deepest south, it was once normal that the ice from ponds would be routinely cut and stacked into massive barns, from which it could be delievered by the ice man every few days all year long. Essentially a mini-glacier made by man.
While true glacier shrinkage would require massive projects to reverse, an industrial use as minor as this fellow's would have minimal costs.
Best darned ice in the world for cocktails. It stays frozen forever, and as it melts, it pops and crackles, releasing 6000 year old air bubbles.
I guess I can understand that they don't want trucks pulling up to glaciers in national parks and scooping up the ice, but I can understand why a bar would send a truck for it.
Iceberg Smoothies - wow, bet his cocktails were pricey.
Ummm... @"mememine69" I disagree with one of your initial premises. "Scientists" did not "gave us the pesticides and cancer causing chemicals that made environmentalism necessary in the first place. "
Sorry, we got the initial pollutant heavy by-products from "industrialists". Have you studied anything about the history of air or water pollution in this country? Do you know about the 1948 Donera Inversion?
Climate change, global warming, cyclical change, etc... whatever; we should do what we can to mitigate harmful effects to our country and planet.
A little knowledge goes a long way...

This isn't like taking some leaves off a tree. He took a truck load of it. The same would be true if he took a truck load of stone, lumber, or anything else without permission. Come on people, think a little bit. It has nothing to do with it being water.
What if he collected the ice after it calved off the glacier?
Because I have seen this done, and actually did it myself.
Should I destroy those pictures of me eating the glacier before the FBI hunts me down?
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! Mr. KillerT,
this is the FBI, were at you door, sir.
Open up, we like to talk to you! KNOCK! KNOCK!

Seems allot of people are kinda unclear how Science works. Science discovers, and then publishes it clearly in very detailed reports, many are publicly accessible. Politicians CUT most the report(s) apart to show either just pro/con, depending on their own agenda or whoever has paid them off, whatever, even if there is MANY negative findings they can still hide these statistically very easily. (refer to Anthropogenic global warming, read the FULL Science behind it!)
So in the end, the stuff being used that's hurting us is at fault from policy makers and corporate greed, why do they still inject hormones into cows? because of money, %30 more (not done in NZ thought), now Scientists don't stand over governments and corps with knifes saying "DO IT, DO IT NOW!!!" ..
Ultimately society is to blame, don't blame Science for societies unfortunate bad use of it. A class based society will ALWAYS destroy itself!
stuff like this is nothing new. there's a company in Iceland that exports glacial ice for drinks and cocktails: www.glacialicecubes.com
