Fermilab’s Tevatron collider runs out of money and time at the end of this month, but physicists there say that they are on track to establish whether the Higgs can exist within the most likely predicted mass range before their September 30 deadline. That’s not the same as actually finding the Higgs boson of course, but physicists say they’ll either rule out the possibility of its existence or not by month’s end.
The Higgs boson, also known as the “God particle,” is the most important missing piece in the Standard Model of particle physics and the theoretical particle thought to imbue all other particles with mass (that’s important). Tevatron has been in competition with CERN’s Large Hadron Collider to find the Higgs first--if it really exists, that is--but so far the God particle eludes physicists at both facilities.
However, the Higgs window is narrowing. Through trillions of particle collisions at varying energy levels, physicists have explored much of the range where the Higgs is predicted to be hiding. And that’s what Fermilab researchers are saying--that by month’s end, they’re pretty sure they will have the information they would need to rule out the existence of a Higgs with a mass within the most likely range.That means physicists will have to get creative in the way they think about what the Higgs really is, or perhaps begin considering alternative theories of how things came to be.
But if it turns out the Higgs does appear to be present within that mass range, it will still be too late for Tevatron to actually find it. With no funding beyond the end of the month it will have to step aside and watch the LHC continue to search for the elusive particle within that range.
The LHC has its own set of deadlines for finding the Higgs, though none are set in stone. CERN’s director general thinks that the LHC’s data should be able to come to a preliminary conclusion about whether or not the Higgs is real by year’s end, and that hard scientific proof one way or the other should emerge next year.

Well that's good news! Its probably going to be a LONG time before we see the end of the Moth. So we have plenty of time to find the Higgs.
I don't want to see the end of the Moth. He makes a great sidekick to the Tick!
Will PopSci ever find an editor for their top-notch journalists?
come on guys, quit nit picking, these are just guickly fashioned synopses, cheers
Fermilab: "You will tell us everything you know about the Higgs Boson!"
Moth: "I swear it doesn't exist!"
*electric shocks*
Moth: "AHHHHHHHH!!!!!"
Fermilab: "Moth, we can do this the hard way or the easy way..."
what is "end of moth". Is there some type of bug infestation there?
I'm Bat Man!

@Igot1forya
Bravo.
Typing is hard, you guys.
LOL @ the misepll. at first i thought the article was about them putting a moth in the Large Hadron Collider and creating a super moth capable of destroying cities like GODzilla

I'm going to vote that the Higgs Boson doesn't exist and that physicists have dug themselves into an incredibly deep hole by chasing these imaginary particles.
Just saying...
epic typo
@GMarsack
lol
@Great Big Pwner
How else are we going to further our understanding if we don't take the steps necessary to find out that we were wrong all along?
Can't wait 'til October!!
"they’ll either rule out the possibility of its existence or not by month’s end."
really!!! I could have told you that. I do not believe a physicist would say something so obviously rediculous.
This just in. Scientists will either rule out the possibility of time travel or not by next sunday.
This just in. philosophers will either rule out the existance of god or not by tomorrow.
Who writes this garbage. Proof reading is obviously not happening.
I was more disturbed by the redundancy of "whether or not." They cleaned the article up once, but had a luminary wordsmith like myself been around -- and I would do so for free -- I could've prevented such eyesores from being published.

There are interesting events taking place at a very obscure place in the world. It is not only about how gravity works but involves how space behaves, also, how it can be used for possible imaging. You can see my site for some details. Rest of the details shall be published soon in the form of a book. Thanks.
If the higgs does not exist, i wonder what exacly will be the nature of reality. Hope tevatron/LHC find the higgs and we have a clear theory of particle physics based on standard model.
Oh what moth to a flame our Fermilab's Tevatron Collider particle breaks? Oh particle! Oh particle! Where art thou?
Higgs window is narrowing, what light attracts a moth like the! Please my heart pleads, I speak and deliver my God Particle to me!
I do not encourage some of the habbits of BubbaGump. It was to much like Roger Rabbit. He did become a little corrupt by being anonymous. I respect PoPSCi. I have said to PoPSCi, complacency breeds contempt.
I like to see one this Collider find that hidden elusive God Particle. Not finding the particle, then its time to reflect and make changes to their electronic gizmos, gadgets. Maybe open up some new ideas and get the BubbaGump out of the system. Its good to clean house now and then and be fair in all you get rid of.
If they look to past comment he has written, he has even written apologies too.
My only request is they allow him to come back a new, something solid and stable with a good foundation. All this random coming back may be thought of as disrespect. BubbaGump has no disrespect. He does have a really liking for PoPSCi and in this persist. PoPSCi is the owner of the house and all the editors too.
I sure like to come back. I have a poor writing skill. What every login I come back as, I am sure they will know it’s me. lol
Take care and God bless.

Oh, and to all other logins, give up the f-bomb... . even small children now a days know what is being said. If you want to respond to someone angry, then be clever, intelligent or funny. Thank you.
Damn. They fixed the typo. No one will understand the funny comment's.

The idea of finding the Higgs Boson particle would bring the theory of the standard model closer to fact (if not completely into the realm of fact).
I believe it may be more exciting to find out that we were wrong about the standard model of particle physics, because it will eventually lead us to seek the answers that will allow us to reshape our misconceptions.
Based on the standard model theory, there are many things that we dream about in the physical world that we believe is just not possible based on our classical understanding. Finding out we're wrong in this case could open the door to a new world of possibilities we once thought never would be possible.
Of course the standard model based on string theory is pretty awesome too. Imagine the possibility of 10 parallel spatial dimensions, and infinite parallel possible realities in existence all at once. Whatever happens in the end, we come out winners.
Can they not just block BubbaGump's IPs? What is s/he on dialup or something?
Also... LOL at saying children can understand the "f-bomb" when it's written as f*** or w/e... pretty sure children can understand the phrase "f-bomb" and know that you mean...
In fact, when you say f*** or f-bomb, or whatever stupid thing you say... everyone knows what word you are "not using". What you are doing is making the readers THINK of that "bad word" same as if you had just used it in the first place; so what's the point of the "censorship"?
Anyone innocent enough not to understand what "F-off" means will also be innocent enough not to understand the uncensored version... And there's no point in censoring for everyone else.
