Miss the good old days of daily oil disaster news? Worry not, for another oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded this morning, leaving all 13 crew members in the water but – according to initial reports – all are alive and only one is injured. The rig is owned by Mariner Energy (somewhere a BP exec is breathing again) and is not currently producing, according to the Coast Guard. Updated. Details are sketchy right now, but rescuers are en route to the site about 80 miles south of the central Louisiana coast. We'll update as this one develops.

Update: Reuters is reporting that the Coast Guard has spotted a one-nautical-mile by 100-foot oil sheen in the water at the site of the rig explosion. The fire has been contained, but the flames have not yet been completely extinguished.

Update: USA Today now reports that the initial claim of an oil sheen by Mariner Energy cannot be confirmed by the Coast Guard, and that an aerial flyover by Mariner personnel could not locate the oil sheen reported earlier. In other good news, the fire aboard the oil platform has now been extinguished.

Well, this might be interesting.

The Senate blocked the BP investigation, but that was probably due to BP backing many of the Senators who opposed the investigation. This is different. Mariner is much smaller than BP and probably doesn't have the connections they do. If a formal investigation can be launched and get passed in the Senate then this might bring about strict reform.

Welp, that didnt take long. Anyone else wondering if these are some how related? *tinfoil hat*

Some evil genius dolphin is attaching missiles to all the sea life in the gulf and directing them toward all the oil rigs! I SWEAR IT!

Can't anyone see that all this would just go away if we turned to another source or energy? Geez. I wonder how many oil rig explosions it's gonna take before we say enough.

The problem with oil is, we need it for more than just energy. Almost all of our products use a byproduct of oil.

Right. Oil dependency will never go away. We only use 70% of Crude oil in transportation fuel and lubricants. The remaining fractions we use for plastics to medicine.

Sir Spectre, yes you may be frighteningly right about that. Scapegoat.

No one has yet to explain the Deep Water Horizon Explosion or if it was an accident at all. I have always assumed it was environmental terrorists involved. They have the most to gain from drilling regulation and are probably tired of getting brushed off by everyone.

That company doesn't have more than $4B to its name. Nowhere close to the $20B BP ponied up to help pay for the damage.

It they had an accident anything like BP's, they'd have to just shrug their shoulders and say, "Sorry."

@thor0997
pfft, not likely. It's probably the frickin' sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their frickin' heads,

Lack of regulation from the US government in the name of profits, I mean how greedy is this? They pump billions out of the ground (all taxable by the American government) and they can't even find their way to spend a fraction of a fraction of a percentage on decent regulation. Apparently it's too much to set up a government run health and safety body that inspects all operations on these rigs. Instead you leave it up to the Oil companies, whose only prerogative is to make money.

You reap what you sow. You need big reform!

To whomever is causing these and finally forcing people to get smart and get off fossil fuels, thank you. I dont approve of your methods, but you are getting the job done. The world is not running out of fossil fuels anytime soon and its not that big of a contributer to climate change. However, fossil fuels should have been ancient history over 2 decades ago. Only through greed and stupidity were they allowed to hang around so long. Fossil fuels are not efficient. It`s a crude and dirty technology. It`s time for progress. The world is waking up.

It's my personal opinion that we should not be drilling where we can not repair a project with in 5 days. When we are drilling a mile below the water. We'll end up with more BP type problems, 90 days, billions of gallons. This is a very unstable area due to weather. Where is the common sense, one storm and many rigs could be 50 fold of BP. They tell us everything is below levels that are acceptable, but what is acceptable to you. Long term, we will not know till then.

@bdotalex, You child. You dont approve of their methods, but you condone terrorism if it gets the job done right? Get your facts straight. Petroleum is not only used for fuels. Its not these terrorists that are getting the job done numb nuts. Its the individuals and small businesses dedicated to renewable energy and the legislators who ARE actually fighting for a dramatic change in our energy dependence on FOREIGN oil.

@jamesbrett12, Stick with the term US Gov. There is no such thing as the American Government. I agree with your post.

@thor0997, It not hard for a diver to plant explosives and probably cheaper than using trained dolphins and sharks with laser beams attached to their fricken heads. Good one Dustin.

BP sabotaged their rig as a distraction.. or its the aliens who are protecting us from ourselves damaging the environment

Why not use all that GM Soy out there for fuel? It burns great in candles, Cleaner and longer lasting than paraffin wax. You can get soy candles at www.urbanchicsoap.com . Instead of eating the GM crops, use it for fuel!
