NASA has just announced the details of its next Mars mission, Curiosity, which will take off between November 25 and December 18, 2011. Curiosity is scheduled to land on Mars between August 6 and August 20, 2012. The rover, also known as the Mars Science Laboratory, will study the Martian surface for conditions favoring the development of microbial life. NASA plans to let Curiosity explore Mars for a full Martian year, or two Earth years.

Hope it works as planned, there are several issues such as the mass of the Skycrane that they are going to use to land the MSL that caused such a big increase in cost that haven’t been tried yet. Cost of MSL so far is over 2.2 billion dollars from an initial cost estimate of 850 million when it was first proposed…

I made a presentation at the 2007 Mars Society Conference that show that they could land the MSL by parachutes and a recoil type device that recoils upwards right before landing. The low velocity parachutes, about the size of the three parachutes used to recover the space shuttle external fuel tanks but much lighter, would deploy after re-entry. By using more parachutes to slow the craft down before impact with the help of a recoil devise that propels the MSL skywards it would reduce the impact speed enough to insure a safe landing.
