Best of What's New 2007

Home Entertainment
Sony Bravia DAV-IS10

NEARLY INVISIBLE SURROUND SOUND

The IS10 tricks you into thinking that five two-inch-tall satellite speakers can fill a room with sound, even though they contain only small tweeter speakers that play just the high notes and some of the midrange tones. The rest of the sound comes from two speakers in a beefy cabinet stashed out of sight. A metal plate beneath the subwoofer speaker bounces bass outward, while a speaker above pumps the rest of the midrange straight up. A digital signal processor slightly changes the timing of sounds from the speakers so they blend seamlessly, fooling your ears into thinking it’s all coming from those tiny tweeters. $800; sonystyle.com
